PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A former Lake Oswego police officer has been sentenced after pleading guilty to engaging in a sex act while on duty.
Michael Svoboda was charged with second-degree official misconduct, a class C Misdemeanor, on March 19. Monday, he was sentenced to 12 months of bench probation after entering a guilty plea.
He also had his police certification revoked and is required to complete 40 hours of community service within 90 days.
The City of Lake Oswego reported Svoboda was first hired by the police department in July 2015. Court documents show the former officer had sex on duty nearly five years ago, on Apr. 15, 2019.
According to city officials, the Lake Oswego Police Department turned the criminal investigation over to Oregon City law enforcement after receiving the allegations against Svoboda. He was on paid administrative leave during the investigation. Afterward, he resigned from his role as an officer.
“I would like to thank the complainant for having the strength to come forward with these allegations,” LOPD Police Chief George Burke said in a statement. “In many cases, victims may be reluctant to make criminal allegations against an officer for fear of retaliation. I am pleased to demonstrate how the systems of accountability function within the City of Lake Oswego.”
Chief Burke also thanked the Oregon City Police Department and the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office for “dedicating scarce resources” to the investigation.
