The new San Diego Sheriff’s Poway Station captain, Claudia Delgado, took charge of the stations in Poway, 4S Ranch and Ramona on April 10.

Delgado said she is happy to be selected for a promotion from lieutenant at the Sheriff’s Fallbrook Substation, where she supervised all patrol and administration operations.

“I am happy for the opportunity to come to Poway and work with the amazing people at the station in one of the best run cities in the county,” Delgado said by telephone on April 12. “It’s a close-knit community that is very involved and it’s something I wanted to be a part of.”

Delgado began her career with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department in 2006. During the past 18 years she has held positions at a detention facility, courthouse, Sheriff’s administrative center and multiple Sheriff stations and substations. She said these diverse assignments, along with her strong investigative background, have shaped and prepared her for this role.

Delgado said she expects many of her day-to-day responsibilities will remain the same, but she will be working on a larger scale in a community with a city government rather than in an unincorporated area. She worked as a a lieutenant in Fallbrook from March 2023 to March 2024.

“Poway has a strong sense of community, and I am looking forward to becoming a part of it,” she said. “We will continue to foster community relationships and provide the best law enforcement services to keep Poway the safest city in the county.”

Poway City Manager Chris Hazeltine said Delgado’s experience demonstrates a commitment to community-oriented policing.

“She is appreciative of the quality-of-life issues that are important to Poway residents and businesses and will serve us well,” Hazeltine said in a press release.

Poway’s former captain, Nancy Blanco, was recently promoted to commander.

Blanco now oversees the Sheriff’s investigations division, including major crimes, narcotics and gangs, and the Regional Crime Laboratory.

Delgado said when the captain’s position became available she had an opportunity to interview and was fortunate to be selected for the job.

“I was looking forward to it and I’m so happy to be here and have an opportunity to work,” she said.
