Students have questions about dorm security, suspects after shooting at NCCU

A student was shot Tuesday night at North Carolina Central University in Durham, and suspects have been identified, the school confirmed.

Police have not released any identifying information about either the victim or the alleged shooters or even said how many people they are looking for.

According to N.C. Central police, officers responded to gunshots Tuesday night around 10:15 p.m. at Lawson Residence Hall, located at 609 E. Lawson St.

A student with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds was transported to Duke University Hospital. It is unclear what led to the student being shot, but the university said suspects have been identified.

The university put the campus on lockdown around 10:20 p.m. and lifted it around 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, stating there was no danger to the public or campus community.

NCCU students shaken by shooting in dorm

WRAL News on Wednesday spoke to students who were shaken by the shooting.

"I was just thinking, like wow," said Rocco Andrews, a freshman at N.C. Central. "It hit me, like it’s so close to where I’m staying. I just tried to stay positive and stay in my dorm.”

Andrews said his teacher canceled class on Wednesday after the stressful situation.

"I just kind of feel for people who had to deal with it," said Andrews. "Actually, one of my classes got canceled because my teachers wanted us to have a mental day to cope with what happened last night.”

One student told WRAL News that the shooter and victim were both students, but police have not confirmed that information.

"I thought it was a random person who was roaming the campus, but then they found out it was another student that came and did it to another student, so I'm not really sure," said Divine Mitchell, a senior. "It was really confusing. We came here and saw a whole bunch of police cars just blocking off the street.”

Andrews is worried about security in the dormitories.

"It is scary," Andrews said. "They could do better, because random people [are] walking in behind students when they scan their cards at the door, so they could do better by just having a police officer at the door or something like that."

According to N.C. Central police, officers were already conducting safety checks at Lawson Residence Hall when shots were fired, and Durham EMS were at the dorm for an unrelated medical call.
