Wear your best cold-water bathing togs and look out for the inflatable polar bear at the Polar Plunge and 5K set for Saturday, April 13, to raise money for more than 21,000 Special Olympics athletes.

The Windsor Police Department and Special Olympics Colorado host the event, which is expected to feature plenty of zany costumes and team T-shirts. The check-in will open at 8 a.m. Saturday at Boardwalk Park, 100 N. Fifth St., in Windsor, with the 5K slated to start at 9 a.m, according to a town release. The polar plunge will start at 10 a.m., and an After Splash Bash will kick off at 10:30 a.m. at Peculiar Ales Brewery at 301 Main St., Unit A, in Windsor.

“Polar plunges play a crucial role in sustaining our organization and providing year-round support for our athletes,” said Megan Scremin, president and chief executive officer of Special Olympics Colorado. “We are thrilled to dive into the 2024 polar plunge season with even greater enthusiasm. With the backing of our fantastic sponsors and the community, we aim to make an even bigger splash and create lasting impact for our athletes.”

Special Olympics Colorado hopes to raise $726,000 from polar plunge events across the state this season.

It costs $80 ($50 for students and Special Olympics athletes) to participate in the plunge, $40 to run or $120 to do both. Participants are encouraged to dress in costumes, coordinate their polar plunge themes with each other and bring other creative ideas.

Windsor police also will host a “Cover the Cruiser” fundraiser at the event. For a $5 donation, participants will be able to write or draw on a police car. It will be stationed near the plunge throughout the event.
