Eglin AFB tightens security with 100% ID checks starting in May

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE — The 96th Security Forces Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base will begin conducting identification checks for all individuals accessing the base in May, requiring 100% ID verification.

In a news release issued Thursday, all individuals without a Department of Defense-issued ID card will need to obtain a visitor's pass. 96th Test Wing commander Brig. Gen. Jeffery Geraghty cited the base's current security and information environment.

"We're committed to safeguarding Eglin's vital national resources," Geraghty said.

Beginning in May, visitor passes can be sponsored by uniformed service members, dependents over 12, DOD employees and retirees. These passes can be obtained at either the East or West gate visitor control centers until the new visitor control center at the Air Force Armament Museum opens in May. Base officials advise that visitor passes be claimed beforehand to ease congestion at the east gate.

Passes are valid for up to 60 days. For visits extending beyond 60 days, a pass can be issued with commander approval to grant the visitor access for up to one year, except for retirees, who must renew their pass every 60 days. Passes must either be returned to the visitors center or shredded when no longer needed.

Additionally, the Defense Biometric Identification System allows for the processing of REAL IDs, facilitates the verification of entry authorization into military installations and helps alleviate gate congestion. REAL IDs can be used if an ID cardholder forgets their ID card at home or when a retiree's ID is lost or expired.
