A different style of ice cream is coming to Camp Hill later this spring.

Joey Jak’s Real Fruit Ice Cream will serve New Zealand-style ice cream in fruit flavors such as blueberry, strawberry and mixed berry. It’s opening at 2208 Market St. in co-space with Tanya’s Cookie Boutique.

New Zealand-style ice cream is growing in popularity in the United States as shops such as Happy Cones Co. and Far Out Ice Cream open.

Unlike American ice cream, New Zealand-style is made from a base of hard ice cream blended with frozen real fruit through a special blender invented exclusively for the ice cream. The result is a fruity soft-serve ice cream.

“The simplicity and wholesomeness along with the many seasonal and add-in options make an extremely appealing alternative to other ice cream products,” said Kim Flinchbaugh, Joey Jak’s owner.

In New Zealand, the ice cream is served in its purest form, but U.S. shops are putting a spin on it by offering an array of toppings and mix-ins.

Flinchbaugh said she came up with the idea for a shop while visiting her daughter and son-in-law in Portland, Oregon where she tried the ice cream for the first time.

Joey Jak’s will source high-quality local products, while the fruit and seasonal add-ons will be chosen under the same high-quality standards, she said.

The shop will have limited seating with counter service and pre-packaged cups to go. It also will sell a vegan option as well as Joey Jak’s branded merchandise, such as sweatshirts, T-shirts and hats.

Flinchbaugh called Camp Hill the quintessential central Pennsylvania community that supports local businesses and added it is the perfect spot for Joey Jak’s. She noted the shop is independent from Tanya’s Cookie Boutique.

“While we are simply sharing space, what goes better with ice cream than cookies? Tanya’s products and strong reputation will be a great compliment to Joey Jak’s,” Flinchbaugh said.

The shop will be open weekends year-round with expanded days and hours during the busy season and special events.
