EASTERN TRAVIS COUNTY (KXAN) – The Travis County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday night it was at the scene of a shooting involving an officer on Hog Eye Road.

TCSO said deputies responded to 9301 Hog Eye Road at 9:36 p.m. after a 911 call requesting a welfare check. When they arrived, TCSO said they encountered a man who was “behaving erratically.”

KXAN’s Nabil Remadna was at the scene late Wednesday and said it was in the Mobile Loaves & Fishes community on Hog Eye Road just East of Austin.

TCSO said while deputies were trying to deescalate the situation, the man “presented a weapon,” and a deputy fired his gun and shot the man, who was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting, and TCSO’s Criminal Investigations Division and TCSO Internal Affairs Unit are also conducting parallel investigations.

TCSO said it will not release further information regarding the investigation.

The deputy is being placed on administrative assignment as the investigation continues.

Still a safe place to live

Mobile Loaves & Fishes founder Alan Graham said despite the incident Wednesday night and a deadly domestic dispute that occurred on March 24, the Community First! Village is still a safe place to live.

“We have been tragically impacted by both of those events. They are separate events,” Graham said.

He said the community calls into the Sheriff’s Office no more than other communities, like apartment complexes, of comparable sizes around the area.

The community continues to adapt to make it even more safe. For example, Graham said they recently implemented badges for all residents and staff to wear and put a guard at the entrance.

Graham did say, however, that it might take a while for the community to heal from the tragedy.

“What is miraculous about this place is that we know each other. It’s unlike any neighborhood that I’ve ever been around. And you end up becoming a family,” he said.
