I enjoy working with adult and young adult clients looking to identify positive ways forward in a natural outdoor setting. Clients I work with are often interested in easing symptoms of anxiety and/or depression, identifying patterns and solutions related to substance use disorder, or are developing strategies for managing AD(h)D.

For over 30 years, I've worked with a range of issues, including depression, anxiety, and grief. My practice is guided by a deep appreciation for psychoanalytic thought and its clinical influence, effecting meaningful shifts in a person's internal and external life. I listen carefully, and while respecting the importance of confidentiality, as well as using empathy, honesty and sometimes humor, I encourage the exploration of conscious and unconscious thoughts/feelings. We explore the influence of unconscious wishes, fears and inhibitions which are often expressed in dreams, life choices or physical symptoms.

Among other areas of clinical interest I like working with, adolescents, college students, and adults who are navigating issues related to queer identity, anxiety, depression, and life transitions.
My goal is to create a safe, positive environment where you can explore the sources of stress and distress in your life. More than this, my goal is to work collaboratively with you to identify solutions and bring about positive change, whether in unwanted behaviors, challenging relationships, or new anxieties brought on by our ever-changing world.

During these times we can experience anxiety, depression, or excessive worry.
I believe that everyone, despite what label or diagnoses we have, deserves to be treated with fairness and empathy. We are not our past; we are not our mistakes and we are not to be judged based on these things. I find opportunity in challenging situations. My philsophy is that we are all doing the best we can based on our level of awareness. Every single being can work to expand on this. I see my job as working with you to shine a light on blind spots, thereby increasing our level of awareness. By doing this, we can address behavior and thought patterns which cause disruption in our lives.

I received my masters degree in social work from New York University in 1987. I practice psychotherapy with a combined perspective of psychodynamic, insight-oriented and cognitive/behavioral techniques. I see psychotherapy as a means to explore the connections between past and present relationships, experiences, and emotional states, for the purpose of creating life changes. I focus upon the relationship between therapist and patient as the catalyst for this self-awareness and growth, creating the foundation for addressing depression, anxiety, trauma, relationships, life transitions, attachment issues, and parenting concerns.

As a young girl is Pittsburgh, I saw people around me being unhappy, confused, not knowing what to do. I wanted to understand why they got themselves in trouble, and why they were troubled. I was curious, and sad. Over the years I learned what those unhappy people could have done. My education began as a teacher of young children. Then I became a caseworker helping people with parenting, adoptions, and the miseries of poverty. Finally, I trained to be a therapist, and treated troubled teenagers, adults with illness, and the old and dying.

Over the years, I have recognized that each of us has a wisdom that resides within. This wisdom within our mind/body system holds the solution. We are designed for balance- yes, we do get off-balance. I will help you understand what your body/mind is attempting to communicate. It is often a simple process. We all have beliefs that originate from our culture, our society, and our family. Some beliefs are helpful, some are not. It is our beliefs that guide our behavior. Beliefs are the 'fuel' that move us. We will discover the 'outdated' beliefs.

Different problems force us to take stock in who we are and how we are living. We struggle through anxiety, sadness, trauma, loneliness; some of us have used unhealthy coping mechanisms to get by. Eventually, we come to learn that asking for help is one of the most powerful actions we can take.

I believe that the therapeutic relationship itself is the greatest agent of change in therapy. Through cultivated trust, I support clients to explore darkness in order to find what brings them light and joy. I offer an approach focused on the needs, wants, and hopes of the person or couple in the room, which means that my approach varies on a client by client basis.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
