AUSTIN (KXAN) — The City of Austin said it would put money toward at-home STD testing.

On Thursday, the city council signed a $750,000 contract with the National Coalition of STD Directors to provide at-home tests to Austin residents.

According to the city, the contract was meant to help get tests to the people who needed them.

Rosalinda Castaneda, the interim communicable diseases unit and division manager, said there is a lot that could stop people from getting tested.

“Could be transportation, taking time off work or because of the stigma of going to an STD clinic, so this gives them the option to still get tested from the comfort of their own home,” Castaneda said.

The funding would come from the American Rescue Plan Act, and while the contract was only a pilot program for the city this year, it could last for five years.
