PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — The Pawtucket couple whose 46 dogs were removed from their now-condemned home last week are now facing dozens of animal cruelty charges.

Helena and Jose Galvao, ages 66 and 69, have each been charged with 46 misdemeanor counts of unnecessary cruelty to animals for failing to provide their dogs with adequate living conditions.

The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA) and Pawtucket Animal Control responded to the couple’s Senate Street home last Monday after receiving an anonymous complaint.

Officers discovered the “matted, dirty and smelly” dogs living in deplorable conditions, according to RISPCA President Wayne Kezirian.

The dogs were brought to the Pawtucket Animal Shelter where each one was medically evaluated by a veterinarian. The dogs were then dispersed among several shelters across the state.

The RISPCA and Potter League for Animals took in 10 dogs each, while the Providence Animal Rescue League took in six, the Cranston Animal Shelter took in two and the Pawtucket Animal Shelter initially kept 18.

The dogs at the Pawtucket Animal Shelter were shaved, cleaned and vaccinated by staff at the Diamond Hill Animal Clinic. Three of those dogs were then brought to the Friends of Homeless Animals RI, and another two were sent to the Cranston Animal Shelter.

The dogs have been vaccinated, medically cleared and will soon be put up for adoption.

The Galvaos are scheduled to be arraigned on May 7.
