Police bust suspected drug lab with explosives, Brentwood neighborhood evacuated

(KRON) — Police evacuated a neighborhood when a bomb found in a suspected drug manufacturing lab at a home in Brentwood needed to be detonated.

Police arrested one person in connection with the suspected lab — 29-year-old Jonathan McCarthy of Brentwood.

Police served a search warrant at a home on the 800 block of Shasta Daisy Drive at about 9:52 a.m. Tuesday. Detectives from the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office responded and said they found a DMT (Dimethyltryptamine) manufacturing lab as well as several possible explosives in three separate containers.

DMT can be naturally found in ayahuasca and produces hallucinogenic effects similar to LSD or magic mushrooms. It can be smoked, vaporized or injected.

The Walnut Creek Bomb Squad responded and said they found suspected TATP (Acetone peroxide), a highly explosive substance. Officers said two of the potentially explosive containers could be moved for detonation while one had to be denotated in place. Police evacuated nearby residents.

All three of the containers were later detonated without incident.

Microsoft maps shows Shasta Daisy Drive is located right next to Liberty High School.

McCarthy was booked into the Martinez jail for an outstanding arrest warrant for being a parolee at larger, police said.

Police are looking for two more suspects both wanted for burglary, narcotics violations, possession of an explosive device and child endangerment:

  • Maxwell Hayworth, 44, of Brentwood

  • Danielle Kumerow, 42, of Brentwood

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information should call the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Investigation Division at 925-313-2600.
