OVERVIEW

German owners Bernhard Praml and Richard Goetz offer a masterclass on how to run a boutique hotel. The two-star Hotel San Telmo is a fine template. A corn-flour-coloured exterior sets the tone for a relaxed stay. Centrally situated, the fair streets of Santa Cruz de La Palma are on your doorstep.

OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Use a combination of the LP-5 and LP-2 to reach the hotel from the airport in a little over ten minutes; it's just around the corner from the Instagrammable Plaza de Santo Domingo. Head out of town to Breña Baja and Bululú Fusion, combining South American flavours with a taste of the Orient.

By plane: flights from London take around 9 hours with a stop in Barcelona; flights from Birmingham take around 11 hours with a stop in Tenerife. The hotel is a 1o-minute taxi ride from the airport. Book flights to La Palma.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Offering all the charm of a classic Canarian property, the hotel lovingly incorporates original features, whilst 21st-century comfort ensures a cosy stay. It's a hotel to appreciate horizontally, perhaps after a countryside hike. Owners Bernhard and Richard keep things simple with clean lines a key to Hotel San Telmo's design.

THE FACILITIES

The personable owners treat you like long-lost friends even if you're staying for the first time as well as if you're returning, and they act as tour guides by recommending things to see and do in the area. The beautiful patio garden doubles as a solarium.

BED AND BATH

The ten rooms are split across the old house and a more modern building. The old house is home to classic doubles with traditional tea ceilings fashioned from the heart of the Canarian pine, and studios which accommodate up to three guests. Minimalist bathrooms max out on style and the power of the shower.

Room types: Double Room, Double Classic Room, Double Sea View Room, Studios

Key amenities: ensuite shower, TV, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi

FOOD AND DRINK

Wake up to a selection of freshly-prepared bread, juices and pastries in the reception/breakfast room. Avocados, bananas, and oranges taste better because of their low carbon footprint. There are cold cuts and cheese to start your day off in the best possible way. The coffee packs a mighty punch.

Breakfast: coffee, tea and juices, bread and pastries, jam, cold meats, cheese and fresh fruit. Served daily.
