David Lee Verdeyen OBITUARY

David Lee Verdeyen, cherished son, beloved father and grandfather has passed away at the age of 86.

David leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication that will be forever remembered by those who lives he touched.

Born and raised in Gary, Indiana, David’s life journey was one of humble beginnings that blossomed into a life filled with purpose and passion. David’s parents were Clarence and Lottie Verdeyen of Polish and Dutch descent. Dave attended Bishop Knoll’s High Scholl then St. Joe’s college. He earned his Master’s degree in Chemistry at Indiana University. His heart has always been with the Hoosiers.

David’s career as a high school chemistry teacher and golf coach has spanned decades leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of countless students. His tenure at Marmion Military Academy, Morton West High school in Berwyn, and Waubonsee College was characterized by his unwavering commitment to excellence and genuine care of his students. He also was the science coordinator at school district 218 in Oak Lawn.

Beyond the classroom, David found joy in many simple pleasures in life. An avid golfer, he found camaraderie on the green sharing countless rounds with his lifelong friends. He loved Friday night fish fry, poker games, betting on the horse races and college IU basketball. He enjoyed traveling to Palm Springs with his wonderful wife Joann. David also spent his retirement years as an expert stock trader and used this talent to raise money for the Aurora Catholic Education Foundation with his dear friend Al.

David’s devotion to his family was unparalleled. He dearly loved his brother Jerry. He was a loving husband to Joann, his wife of 63 years. David was a devoted father to Julie, Jeff and Daniel and to his 6 grandchildren Lindsay, Cheryl, Noah, Icarus and Spencer. He also leaves behind his beloved grand dog, Shadow, who brought him joy and companionship.

Along with his parents, David was preceded in death by his son, Jeff and brother, Jerry.

David’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be forever cherished and deeply missed.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 AM on Friday, April 19, 2024 at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, 8S055 Dugan Road, Sugar Grove, IL 60554, with a visitation one hour prior to mass.
