A teenager was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries Sunday after the car he was riding in on Route 163 in Bozrah hit multiple obstructions, including two utility poles and an embankment, which led to the teen being ejected.

The crash was reported at 3:50 p.m. just north of the intersection of Bishop Road, where a 2012 Mazda3i being driven south by a 20-year-old Norwich man left the road, according to Connecticut State Police.

The vehicle hit two mailboxes in the area of 111 Bozrah St. and continued south before hitting two utility poles, state police said. The Mazda then entered the northbound shoulder of Route 163 and hit a metal beam guardrail, according to state police.

The Mazda finally stopped after traveling across both lanes and hitting an embankment off the southbound side of the road, ejecting a 19-year-old passenger from the vehicle, state police said.

The Norwich teen was taken in an ambulance to Backus Hospital with serious injuries. He was later flown via LifeStar to Hartford Hospital.

The driver of the Mazda reported minor injuries and was treated at Backus Hospital, state police said.

During the series of collisions, two vehicles parked in a residential driveway were struck by debris and sustained minor damage, state police said.

The Mazda had to be towed from the scene.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information or video footage of the crash has been asked to contact Trooper Christopher Brett at Troop E at 860-848-6500.
