Neosho High students learn to vote on real county machines
NEOSHO, Mo. — An election at a southwest Missouri school isn’t limited to picking the next student body president. Neosho High School students are choosing new leadership for student council. And they’re doing it using the actual voting machines used for county elections. The Newton County clerk says it’s a chance for teens to learn the election process and the value of casting a vote.
“I learned about how the ballots work – and how the voting process is very easy. Some people might not know, but you just grab your ballot. You vote really quickly. And then you just put it in the machine and that’s it,” said Brock Pyle, NHS student.

“They’ll definitely be more comfortable. And I feel like this will just engage people and encourage them to participate in elections in general because it’s not so scary because they already know how to do it,” said Sydnee Minton, NHS student.
“It is a good way to show the kids how the process goes. Because in today’s times, it’s not something you see anywhere else other than the polls or to come to the courthouse and see it in person. And it would maybe relieve some anxiety,” said Tami Owens, Newton County Clerk.
This is the first time the county clerk has worked with Neosho High School to use the county voting machines.
