Honolulu (KHON2) – The Pacific Intelligence Innovation Initiative (P3I) supports the development of career pathways, internship/outreach/training programs, and certificates/accreditations to transition students into local companies and the Department of Defense (DoD) in order to meet the demand within the DoD for intelligence, IT, cybersecurity, electronic warfare, data science professionals in Hawai‘i.

As part of its mission, P3I supports programs for Hawai‘i students and residents looking to receive hands-on experience and certifications to fulfill much needed jobs. Hui Huliau Hou is one of many examples of offering a workforce program available to Hawai‘i’s high students in Hawai‘i.

“During our work here in Hawaii, our partner companies and organizations in industries that support the Department of Defense, all reported similar issues with staffing. Knowing that the DoD has big plans for construction in Hawaii, Wake Island, and Guam over the next 5 years or so, we decided to take action in support of the Waianae Coast. We decided to create an electronics and technology certification program, as the skills young adults would learn during this program would be applicable in a wide range of trades that support military construction. Our program is free, and our first class is split between students from Waianae and Nanakuli high schools. It’s a 12-week certification program, where students will learn about building technologies, coding, and various installation methods,” says Shavonn Okamura, Executive Director of Hui Huliau Hou.

According to Okamura, the program eases into these concepts with fun lab activities, which teach the basic skills required to learn the more advanced concepts. Some lab activities include building circuit boards, coding, and various electrical measurement and testing procedures.
