Motherhood in Alabama

A few years ago, I discovered that recent hospital closures mean some Alabama mothers must travel nearly two hours to reach a hospital where they can safely deliver their babies.

It shouldn’t have surprised me, but it did.

Learning about that simple thing – the drive time it takes to reach a hospital when you’re in labor – led to more questions than answers as I looked at how mothers and babies fare in Alabama.

I’ve written about lots of different things in my career as a reporter, but I keep coming back to women and children and the challenges they face in Alabama.

What I’ve found, in my reporting, are broken systems, underfunded programs and political inattention that have combined to make motherhood in Alabama a difficult – and sometimes life-threatening – struggle.
