Do you feel like anxiety is keeping you from enjoying life more fully? Or that anxiety is getting in the way of your ability to meet important goals? As a therapist, I have found that although anxiety can make us feel alone, these experiences are so common. My primary focus as a clinician is treating anxiety disorders using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), specifically exposure and response prevention (ERP), because this approach is so effective.

"There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in" (Leonard Cohen). It's not your imagination. Life has gotten harder over the past couple of years. And when life gets harder, our "issues" and problems tend to get larger. Relationships may be strained. You may feel anxious and overwhelmed. Yet you know in your core that life can be better. I'm glad you've reached out to me! Let me help you navigate through the rough spots by accessing the strengths that lie within you. Together we will locate, nurture and expand the light in your life so you can feel better, function more effectively, and get the tools you need to cope.

Misophonia, Anxiety, Panic Attacks & Panic Disorder, Alcoholism / Addiction Recovery, Creative Recovery (a focus on the arts and artists), Mindfulness Meditation, Spirituality, Buddhist Psychology, Breathwork.
I am currently taking Misophonia clients only. Even though there is no known cure for Misophonia, there can still be great relief. I work with clients to identify the areas of life most impacted by Misophonia and we work to implement interventions that relieve suffering. These interventions can involve audiological tools, exposure and response prevention, nervous system therapies, interpersonal communication skills, as well as more novel treatments like the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP).

With 20 years in the field, I specialize in relational issues, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, sexual assault, illness, and grief/loss.
I offer an integrative approach to growth and healing using traditional talk therapy and body-centered modalities. My work honors the wholeness of each person and their innate power to heal themselves. I strive to create a safe and courageous environment where the qualities of curiosity, acceptance, and compassion are present. I appreciate that race, gender, sexual orientation, class, and other identities impact our life experience. I am attentive to social traumas, and support clients in healing such wounds to live more freely. I know first-hand, as a client myself, how transformative a collaborative therapeutic relationship can be

Good therapy focuses on helping people overcome obstacles to living a productive and fulfilling life -- whether in relationships, work, or creative self-expression. As a psychotherapist in practice for 25+ years, my aim is to create an environment where patients can learn about themselves, grow, and, most important, change. My work has been guided by my social work background and psychoanalytic training, and has been deeply influenced by my connection to dance and the arts. I work with people of all ages and backgrounds who struggle with anxiety, depression, personality problems, bereavement, life-threatening illnesses, and family/relationship issues.

Some of my specialty areas are around anxiety, developmental and intergenerational trauma, queer identity, masculinity, relationship issues, existential distress, and spiritual integration.
Therapy gives you an opportunity to transform and move toward a deeper understanding of yourself as life unfolds. Amidst times that may feel dark, overwhelming, or lacking vitality, anxiety and dissociation can manifest in so many ways that feel fragmenting and harmful to the self and body. We can be strongly defended against our unconscious wishes, fantasies, and unmet needs. How and why we behave, think, get stuck or feel fear, love, shame, and joy are layered with so much meaning. Together, we may find ways to build resilience, steps toward action, self-awareness, fulfilling connection, and a sense of wholeness.

My clients often struggle with relationship issues stemming from early childhood trauma; this results in coping mechanisms that work, but may carry a big price tag. They may grapple with sexual abuse, partner violence, sexual orientation and/ or disability related issues. Often, these manifest as substance abuse, cutting, communication problems or self- isolating behaviors. They may have friends and family members who do not truly "see" them, and as a result their own view of self is dim. Other clients are coping with situational anxiety and depression related to Covid, and need to establish safety, structure and hope.

Other areas of specialty include chronic pain and body symptoms, existential anxiety, trauma, life and relationship transitions, grief, and creative roadblocks.
Pain seeks our attention. Emotional distress manifests or "speaks" through physical distress. Adults living with physical or emotional pain can benefit from BODY-CENTERED psychotherapy. Sessions can include BODYWORK. Dreamwork and expressive therapies can also be utilized to amplify awareness. Like dreams, body symptoms are dynamic conduits into the unconscious; likewise, they serve as messengers charged with waking us up and redirecting our energies back toward life. Clients become adept explorers, listeners & learners, moving with curiosity toward rather than away from feeling, as they befriend disenfranchised parts of themselves.

My specialties include: anxiety and stress reduction, grief and loss across the life-span, adult trauma, gender, ethnic and racial identity concerns, challenges to the creative process, and women focused issues.
My practice offers a safe and relaxing space to begin the psychotherapeutic journey. As a college professor and clinician for many years I offer a wide range of therapeutic approaches that go beyond talk therapy: such as mindfulness practice, mind/body awareness skills, and other psycho-educational practices. I think that good clinical treatment resides in the therapeutic relationship informed by the latest research on the brain and the gut and an overall multi-modal approach to the person(s) sitting across from me.

I have found that a client-centered approach works best; whatever works for you, be it career coaching, rethinking your perceptions of self and others, negotiating challenges and changes in your life through reframing those perceptions or exploring your personal history, your story, using journaling, dream analysis, mindfulness to understand your relationship patterns. My specialty now is in addressing life transitions and the feelings these changes engender. My focus is in learning to stay present, to be aware of feeling states, and to move toward clarity and forgiveness in order to reset the dynamics that surround depression, anxiety, anger, trauma.

My goal is to help you create deeper wells of safety, strength, and joy through non-judgmental understanding of yourself and your environments, and exploring new patterns, experiences, and meanings. This can support you in changing, coping, and thriving where you want to. I approach my work with humility, respect, and a genuine desire to connect. I see therapy as a way to help ourselves navigate the complex web of personal, social, and relational dynamics that shape our lives. These dynamics can be helpful and harmful, and are often interlocking and rooted in ways we have learned to keep ourselves safe and find our joy.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
