A single-vehicle crash resulted in the death of one person over the weekend in Southwest Austin, although officers with the Austin Police Department did not find the dead driver until more than eight hours later, according to a press release.

Officers responded to the scene in the 9600 block of East U.S. 290 just after 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, the release said and found that the driver of the single-vehicle crash was dead.

An initial investigation into the wreck shows that it occurred Saturday night a little after 10:50 p.m., according to the release.

A total of 21 fatal crashes have occurred in Austin this year so far, the release said, compared to 28 at the same time last year.

The American-Statesman contacted the Austin Police Department to clarify why it took officers hours to respond to the crash but did not immediately hear back.

No other information is available at this time.
