The track and field season may be starting to come to a close, but Fleming’s athletes are far from tiring out. Quite the opposite. On Tuesday, the Wildcats made the trip to Julesburg for the Sedgwick County Cougar Classic, where they subsequently added 17 top-20 finishes to an already impressive resume.

Sophomore Jared Betley led the gold-worthy performances with first in the 3,200-meter run, which he won by a cool 13 seconds with a mark of 11 minutes, 36.77 seconds. He backed that up by placing fourth in the mile, clocking in at 5:18.47.

Senior Matix Haney sped to seventh in the 400, recording a time of 56.06, before claiming 14th in the long jump with 16 feet, 1.25 inches. The boys 4×100 relay marked a podium finish, just barely, by taking 10th and crossing the finish line at 50.47.

Junior Travis Johnson kept the party going for the boys with seventh in the discus with a throw of 109–1, as senior David Betley matched his seventh-place efforts in the shot put with a 37–5 distance.

Sophomore Brooklyn Schaefer kept the success rolling for ladies with seventh in the 100, which she earned with a 14.63 time. Sophomore Emoree Lousberg secured ninth in the 800 with a smooth 2:48.18. The ladies’ 4×100 quartet finished right in the middle of the pack at fifth place, which it achieved through a 56.73 mark.

The 4×800 squad, likewise, managed fifth thanks to a time of 11:51.98. Sophomore Ashley Bornhoft fell into a three-way tie for ninth in the high jump after she cleared the 4–5 bar. Schaefer outdid her in the long jump, winning the bronze with a leap of 14–7.75. Freshman Hadley Stull and Bornhoft tested their luck in the same long jump event, but fell just off of the podium at 11th (12–11.75) and 13th (12–7.75), respectively.

Schaefer rounded out her day with seventh in the triple jump thanks to a landing at 30–2.25, as senior Madi Serrato flung herself 7–10 into the air to secure seventh in the pole vault.
