A precautionary boil water advisory is in effect for a portion of Troy.

A malfunction occurred in the Great Lakes Water Authority system on Wednesday, April 10, which caused the water pressure to drop.

The city issued the advisory for the area between Crooks Road and Adams/South Boulevard and Square Lake Road, according to a post on the city’s Facebook page.

The city can’t guarantee the quality of the drinking water until testing has been completed; this will take 48 hours.

An advisory does not mean that the water is contaminated but that there is a chance contamination has occurred.

Here are tips from Oakland County on following the advisory:

— Bring water used for cooking or drinking to a rolling boil and boil for 1 minute. Let it cool for 15 minutes unless using to prepare a hot drink.

— Wash dishes by hand and use a bleach solution (1 teaspoon bleach per gallon of water. Bleach solution should say it contains 8.25% of sodium hypochlorite). Soak the rinsed dishes in the sanitizer solution for at least 1 minute. Allow dishes to completely air dry. If you use a dishwasher, you should run the dishwasher through the hottest or ‘sanitize’ cycle. Following the sanitizing step, use a clean basin to make a bleach solution of 1 teaspoon bleach per gallon of water. Remove the dishes from the dishwasher and soak in the sanitizer solution for at least one minute. Let the dishes air dry completely before using again.

– Tap water can be used for showering, baths and shaving, but do not swallow water or allow it to get in your eyes, nose, or mouth. Supervise children and disabled individuals during their bath to make sure water is not swallowed. It’s also a good idea to minimize bathing time. Though the risk of illness is minimal, those who have recent surgical wounds, have compromised immune systems, or have a chronic illness may want to consider using bottled or boiled water for cleansing until the advisory is lifted.

— Use boiled or bottled water to brush your teeth.
