EMILY: ALL MIDDLETON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WILL START THE YEAR WITH VIRTUAL LEARNING. THEY ARE SUSPENDING ATHLETIC PRACTICES TOMORROW. THIS PLAN WILL BE IN PLACE UNTIL OCTOBER 2. THE DISTRICT WILL REVISIT DATA TO DETERMINE HOW TO MOVE FORWARD. KELLY: OFFICIALS IN PLATTE COUNTY ALSO ANNOUNCING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS WILL LEARN IN PERSON. MIDDLETON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WILL BE UNDER A HYBRID PLAN. THEY ARE DEFERRING A DECISION ABOUT SPORTS TO THE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC SPORTS ASSOCIATION. EMILY: THEY SAY FALL SPORTS WILL GO ON AS PLANNED FOR NOW. THEY MUST FOLLOW COVID-19 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS. THE GREATER SUBURBAN CONFERENCE WILL VOTE ON MONDAY TO DETERMINE WHAT SPORTS WILL LOOK LIKE. PEOPLE IN NORTH KANSAS CITY WILL HAVE TO WEAR MASKS IN PUBLIC UNTIL NEXT YEAR. THE CITY’S CURRENT MASK ORDER WAS SCHEDULED TO EXPIRE ON SUNDAY. BUT TODAY, THE MAYOR EXTENDED IT UNTIL AT LEAST JANUARY 16. THE CITY IS ALSO BANNING ANY GATHERINGS WITH MORE THAN 50 PEOPLE ON CITY PROPERTY UNLESS THE CITY SPONSORS THE EVENT. THE ANNOUNCEMENT COMES JUST A WEEK AFTER MAYOR QUINTON LUCAS EXTENDED KANSAS CITY’S MASK REQUIREMENT TO JANUARY 16. KELLY: WE’RE TRACKING NEW CASES OF THE CORONAVIRUS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE STATE LINE. KANSAS IS REPORTING 966 NEW CASES SINCE WEDNESDAY. MISSOURI IS REPORTING 1200 NEW CASES SINCE YESTERDAY. TO GIVE YOU A BETTER IDEA OF THE SPREAD OF THE VIRUS OVER THE PAST SEVEN DAYS, 12.8% OF TESTS ARE COMING BACK POSITIVE IN KANSAS. IN MISSOURI, IT’S 10.6%. THE NATIONAL AVERAGE IS JUST ABOVE 6%. WE’VE JUST LEARNED THIS AFTERNOON, ONE OF THE AREA’S FAVORITE FALL EVENTS WON’T HAPPEN THIS YEAR BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC. THE RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL IN BONNER SPRINGS HAS BEEN CANCELED. Decisions on fall sports, extracurricular activities left to school districts

The Platte County Health Department's Board of Trustees voted Thursday to allow schools to open on Sept. 8 with pre-K through fifth grade being in-person and sixth through 12th grades under a hybrid model. The board chose to defer to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in defining exactly what hybrid model means.The board said it would not be involved in discussions on fall sports and other extracurricular activities, instead leaving those decisions to school districts, conferences and Missouri State High School Activities Association.The Health Department director has been directed to develop gating criteria that can be used by the school districts to determine when it is appropriate to move between: all virtual learning; a hybrid model; and in-person learning.
