Pick the 2000 season's top offensive player

Here's your chance to help select the ESPN.com Offensive Player of the Year for the 2000 high school football season. Review the credentials of each candidate below and cast your vote.

 Roscoe Crosby
Roscoe Crosby
Roscoe Crosby, WR
6-3, 197, 4.38, Union, S.C.
Lemming's take: The No. 1 prospect in South Carolina. He had a great senior year, catching 70 passes for over 1,300 yards and 22 TDs, and he also returned two kickoffs and one punt for scores. Crosby is simply a great football player. On film he shows tremendous body control and big-time separation speed and runs great routes. Was voted the AP All-State and the state's Offensive Player of the Year the past two years and is a member of the AP's All-Decade Team. A superior talent who is also considered to be the best baseball player in the state. On defense he totaled 30 tackles and two picks at CB. He batted .561 this spring with nine home runs as an outfielder. He has committed to Clemson.

 Jabari Davis
Jabari Davis
Jabari Davis, RB
6-0, 230, 4.5, Tucker, Ga.
Lemming's take: A prep version of Ricky Williams, Davis was a marked man this season and still rushed for 1,225 yards and 20 TDs on just 155 carries. An explosive ball player who is extremely hard to wrap up. Very strong in the legs with excellent balance and body control. As a junior he rushed for 1,028 yards and 11 TDs, averaging over 7 yards per carry. Bench-presses 325. In track he has been timed in a 10.8 100 meters. He has committed to Tennessee.

 Kevin Jones
Kevin Jones
Kevin Jones, RB
6-1, 215, 4.2, Springfield-Cardinal O'Hara, Pa.
Lemming's take: This prep superstar got off to a slow start due to injuries and missed three games with a badly sprained ankle. He recovered nicely, carrying the ball 192 times for 1,310 yards and 21 TDs. He also caught two TD passes and returned a punt 60 yards for a score and a kickoff 87 yards for another TD. He's the closest back I've seen to Herschel Walker in the past 20 years. His senior film showed a super back running behind an inexperienced line who still made something out of nothing. Although he was a marked man, he seemed to have no difficulty shaking defenders. Once he got his shoulders squared, even defenders with great angles had trouble catching him. In track he's been timed in a 10.2 100 and a 21.2 200 and has run the 60 meters in 6.7. He has committed to Virginia Tech.

 Joe Mauer
Joe Mauer
Joe Mauer, QB
6-4, 205, 4.7, St. Paul Cretin-Derham Hall, Minn.
Lemming's take: Heading into the season, Mauer ranked as one of the top two prospects in the country, and he did not disappoint. As a senior he threw for more than 3,000 yards and 41 TDs. In just about every game he was a difference-maker type of signal caller, showing a superior arm and great coolness under fire. He reminds me of Drew Henson in not only football, but also baseball. Mauer is ranked as the nation's top high school catcher and should be among the first picks in next June's 2001 baseball free agent draft. He batted close to .600 this year and the baseball scouts tell me he has one of the best arms they have ever seen. Plays for the same program that produced the Walsh brothers and FSU's Chris Weinke. He's also a standout guard in basketball. He has committed to FSU.

 Adrian McPherson
Adrian McPherson
Adrian McPherson, QB
6-4, 180, 4.5, Bradenton-Southeast, Fla.
Lemming's take: The No. 1 prospect in the state of Florida, McPherson had a super senior season, throwing for over 3,000 yards and 37 TDs. Another terrific all-around QB who passed for 2,497 yards and 33 TDs as a junior. He was voted the Junior Player of the Year in Florida in both football and basketball. Has the uncanny knack of avoiding the rush and throwing accurately while on the run. Also considered to be one of the state's top basketball players and would like to play both sports in college. He has committed to FSU.

 Eric Shelton
Eric Shelton
Eric Shelton, RB
6-2, 230, 4.45, Lexington-Bryan Station, Ky.
Lemming's take: A Curt Enis lookalike with strength, speed and moves. This season Shelton averaged nine yards per carry behind an inexperienced offensive line, totaling 1,420 yards and 12 TDs. For his career he rushed for 4,970 yards and 59 TDs and is a two-time class 4A Player of the Year for the state of Kentucky. Totaled 129 tackles (41 for losses) and 11 sacks during his prep career at LB. A game-breaker who has been timed in a 10.6 100 meters and finished fifth in state in both the 110 high hurdles and the triple jump. Just a fabulous athlete. He will play for FSU.

 D.J. Shockley
D.J. Shockley
D.J. Shockley, QB
6-2, 190, 4.4, College Park-N. Clayton, Ga.
Lemming's take: The No. 1 prospect in the state of Georgia. One college coach compared Shockley to Michael Vick. This season he threw for 1,800 yards and 11 TDs and rushed for over 800 yards and six scores. He's extremely accurate in short- to medium-range passes and has the arm strength to throw the deep out with authority. Especially dangerous on the rollout, he's a difference-maker type of offensive player. He's also a standout on defense where he totaled 50 tackles at DB. In track he's been timed in a 10.9 100 meters and has long jumped 22½ feet. He averages 15 points and 3 rebounds a game as a PG in basketball and is also an outstanding pitcher and shortstop in baseball. Committed to Georgia.

 Marcus Spears
Marcus Spears
Marcus Spears, TE
6-5, 270, 4.8, Baton Rouge-Southern Lab, La.
Lemming's take: One of the nation's finest football/basketball prospects, he's also considered to be the top pure TE prospect in the nation. This season he caught 28 passes for 435 yards and nine scores, displaying great body control and outstanding quickness. On defense he totaled more than 70 tackles and seven sacks at DE. Can play either TE or DE in college. In basketball he averages 20 pounds and 10 rebounds a game as a power forward. He's also a standout in track, finishing second in the state in the shot put with a toss of 56 feet and third in the state in the discus with a throw of 165 feet. Committed to LSU..

 Carnell Williams
Carnell Williams
Carnell Williams, RB
6-0, 190, 4.5, Attalla-Etowah, Ala.
Lemming's take: Voted Mr. Football for the state of Alabama this season, Williams rushed for 1,639 yards and 23 TDs, averaging close to 10 yards per carry. For his career he rushed for over 6,000 yards. He is a speed back with tremendous moves, vision, balance and body lean. As a junior he rushed for 2,612 yards and 38 TDs, averaging over 10 yards per carry. He has a soft pair of hands and the ability to become a great one. He's also one of the state's top punt and kickoff returners. Committed to Auburn.

 Reggie Williams
Reggie Williams
Reggie Williams, WR
6-4, 215, 4.38, Tacoma-Lakes, Wash.
Lemming's take: The top WR prospect in the country. He reminds me a lot of David Terrell in his size, strength and the way he adjusts well to poorly thrown balls. A difference-maker type of receiver who caught 40 passes for 790 yards and 16 TDs this season while also rushing for over 300 yards and seven scores. On defense Williams showed great anticipation and an explosive burst at FS, picking off six passes and totaling 61 tackles. He's a terrific three-sport athlete who averages 13 points and 9 rebounds a game in basketball and has been timed in a 10.7 100 and a 22.2 200 meters in track. He's also the state's top triple jumper with a leap of 46½ feet. He has committed to Washington.
