COLUMBUS, OH — Nearly 100 Ohioans have died from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, the state health department confirmed Tuesday.

Over the past three weeks, Ohio has averaged 35 COVID-19-related deaths per day. On Tuesday, the state confirmed 98 deaths caused by the virus, easily the highest total of the past 21 days and one of the highest death counts in the pandemic's history in Ohio.

Since the start of the pandemic, at least 6,118 Ohioans have died from COVID-19 complications.

Deaths are a lagging statistic, tending to spike after surges in new cases and hospitalizations occur, Gov. Mike DeWine has said previously.

COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations also continued to surge Tuesday.

"If there's a way from you to pull back from something, do that," DeWine said Tuesday as he encouraged Ohioans to avoid in-person gatherings.

More than 8,600 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed Tuesday, while 364 Ohioans entered hospitals for coronavirus care. Of those 364, 29 were admitted to intensive care units for COVID-19 treatment.

Here are all of Tuesday's COVID-19 numbers in Ohio:

  • New cases: 8,604
  • New deaths: 98
  • New hospitalizations: 364
  • New ICU admissions: 29

More than 236,000 Ohioans are presumed to have recovered from COVID-19, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
