GRANADA Introduces Virtual Reality Into Healthcare with a scientific meeting organised by Microsoft

The advanced centre for clinical simulation in Granada de Iavante, the training and evaluation line of the Progreso y Salud Foundation of the Andalucian Regional Government Ministry of Health and Families, has hosted a scientific meeting organised by Microsoft, focused on mixed reality applied to the health field, which places it “at the forefront”, as Granada introduces virtual reality, applied to health.

As the Board explained in a press release, mixed reality technology combines the use of virtual reality, and augmented reality technologies, to create an environment where physical and virtual objects can interact in real-time, an immersive technology that has an increasing number of applications in the health sector.
The event brought together 25 experts from different centres of the Andalucian Public Health System (SSPA), including several managers, as well as representatives from the University of Granada (UGR) and the Health Technology Park (PTS), who have analysed the incorporation of specific mixed reality devices, such as Microsoft HoloLens 2, to different training and care processes within the public health sector.
Specifically, cases of common uses have been reviewed, such as the use of mixed reality to explain to the patient what the diagnosis of their pathology is through the visualization of 3D medical images. Another of the cases reviewed has been its application to the preparation and performance of surgical interventions.
Thanks to this resource, the surgeon will be able to consult data, images, and any medical material that has been included in the preparation process to be able to view it in the operating room, including the possibility of superimposing images on the patient, and even request remote assistance connecting with other specialists.

In the field of training, mixed reality offers the possibility of learning by interacting with real elements and through a set of holograms and virtual guides that allow assimilating all aspects of a specific procedure or technique.
In addition, it is possible to carry out holoportation, that is, to share a virtual scene between several distant people, and the session concluded with a test of the Microsoft HoloLens, so that the attendees saw first-hand the capabilities and real experience of this technology.
Armando Romanos, the director of Iavante, said of the meeting, “Iavante is characterized by its constant search for the most innovative practices and technologies to be incorporated into the offer of training services that we offer to SSPA professionals”, as reported by granadadigital.es.
