‘Experience PlayStation’ Starts Today, Does It Have Something To Do With The PlayStation 5 Announcement?

This article is more than 4 years old.

Speculation abounds after Sony’s announcement that it will be skipping E3 for the second year in a row, even though it’s going to be in prime PS5-hyping season at this point. With that major event off the calendar and the Xbox Series X already revealed at the Game Awards, everyone’s wondering when we’re going to get to see the new black box. Assuming it’s a black box, of course, which seems like a safe assumption. And an odd new “Experience PlayStation” event has people guessing.

Experience PlayStation is happening at Sony Square in New York from January 14-February 15, apparently every day from 12:00-7:00PM. The listing only says “Celebrate 25 Years of Play with a collection of titles on PS4 and PS VR.” As GamesRadar notes, it seems like a kind of follow-up to a similar event in December, and that Sony does use this New York space for demos on a regular basis.

But the timing does seem interesting. Sony revealed its past two consoles at its New York Theater, and it revealed the original PS4 on February 20. We already know a fair amount about the PS5 thanks to some articles in Wired and a steady drip feed of information, but we’re still due for a full reveal, complete with a look at the box itself. This new event would seem to run right up to the point where we would be expecting to hear more about the PS5.

I fully expect another New York reveal for the PlayStation 5, and I also expect that to happen sometime in February. It’s likely that this event is not directly related to this second event per se, but the timing does still seem to maybe offer a hint about when we’ll be hearing about the new machine. My guess is sometime mid-late February, shortly after this event ends.

I’ve contacted Sony about what’s going on with Experience PlayStation and will report back with what I hear, maybe go up myself if it seems interesting. For now, there’s no big news, but you can bet we’re going to get some soon.
