WALDEN - A two-alarm fire on Plains Road early Saturday morning left two Walden families homeless.

The first alarm sounded just after 2:30 a.m. and the first firefighters were on the scene six minutes later. They found heavy fire in the front of the two-story, two-family home.

A second alarm was sounded and firefighters from Orange Lake, Montgomery, Plattekill, Coldenham, the Stewart Air National Guard Base and the City of Newburgh responded to assist Walden firefighters, along with the Town of Montgomery Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Orange County fire investigators, and Central Hudson, which arrived to shut off power to the house.

Due to a lack of water in that area, several responding fire companies established a tanker task force to supply sufficient water at the scene. Bullville and Modena firefighters later responded to relieve other companies. Maybrook and Push firefighters were on standby to cover other calls in the area.

One of the two homeless families received assistance from a local chapter of the Red Cross.

No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.
