County fairs bring on the sights, sounds and tastes of summer

The Gratiot County Fair for Youth opens for a week of activities on Saturday, July 31, through Aug. 7 at 701 S. Lincoln Ave., Alma. The fair features carnival rides and midway food; exhibitions and competitions for farm animals including calves, steers, sheep, swine, poultry and rabbits; archery competition and more. There will be a dog show at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 31, and a cat show at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 1. Carnival ride wristbands are $25, and are good for unlimited rides.

Meanwhile, the Isabella County Youth and Farm Fair continues through Saturday at the County Fairgrounds, 500 N. Mission St., Mt. Pleasant. Highlights include the Midseason Championship Demo Derby at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Pulling Day at 4 p.m. Saturday.
