Belmont Farmers’ Market to be held Oct. 15

Submitted by Jennifer Brown

The Belmont Farmers’ Market will be held from 2 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 15 in the Belmont Center municipal parking lot.

Now that it’s October, we close at 6 p.m. through the last day of the season, Oct. 29.

Vendor Profile: Hooked (Red’s Best and Boston Smoked Fish Company)

Jimmy Rider and Jason Tucker started Hooked Fish Shop at Bow Market in Somerville’s Union Square. Hooked sells Red’s Best fresh, local seafood and Boston Smoked Fish Company products as well as creative, street-food inspired ready-to-eats.

Red’s Best was founded in 2008 by Jared Auerbach. He has created a way for consumers to have direct access to the freshest seafood. To support and sustain community based American fishing fleets they built software, which enables them to track daily catch from the moment a fisherman offloads their vessel onto a Red’s Best truck or a dockside facility. Red’s Best innovative technology and logistics platform reduces the distance between you and your fishermen.

The Boston Smoked Fish Company produces the highest quality smoked fish available using sustainably harvested fish, locally sourced ingredients, and all natural preparation. They hand select the freshest fish daily from the docks in Boston, expertly match it with fresh herbs and spices, and gently smoke it in small batches over specific varieties of North American hardwoods.

You can find Hooked every week at the Market. Preorder at https://bit.ly/370G5Ls by noon Tuesday or shop at the Market.

Safety at the market

The market looks a little different this year. Changes include social distancing, preordering when possible, masks and hand washing. There is a one-way path through a larger market area. To reduce crowding, there are no social events. Read the COVID-19 safety rules for you, for the volunteers and for the vendors: http://Belmontfarmersmarket.org/covid19-safety.

Food assistance

The market matches: SNAP benefits (formerly Food Stamps) up to $20 per shopper each week, WIC FMNP (for moms and infants) and Senior FMNP coupons (for seniors). Most farmers accept HIP (Healthy Incentives Program), which offers free produce to SNAP users.

This season the Market will match P-EBT (Pandemic-Electronic Benefits Transfer) benefits along with SNAP, up to the $20 limit per week. P-EBT is additional money for families to buy food while schools are closed due to COVID-19.
