PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Department of Health announced Wednesday that 3,200 additional COVID-19 vaccine appointments will by posted at 9 a.m. Thursday on the state’s online portal.

Many of the appointments are for this coming Friday at the mass vaccination site in Cranston, which is why they’re being released on Thursday, according to Health Department spokesperson Joseph Wendelken.

The state typically releases new appointments on Tuesday mornings and Friday evenings.

Rhode Islanders ages 40 and older, as well as people ages 16 and older with underlying health conditions, are currently eligible to get vaccinated. Eligibility will open up to all Rhode Islanders ages 18 and older next week.

Wendelken said the new appointments will be for both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, and come as the state works to cover previously scheduled Johnson & Johnson vaccine appointments. Rhode Island and other states have paused the use of that vaccine as the CDC and FDA investigate a few cases of blood clots.

After there was no COVID-19 data released on Monday and only partial data released Tuesday night due to a technical issue, the Health Department released a full slate of data on Wednesday.

Health officials report 437 new positive cases and more than 21,000 tests administered the previous day, putting the daily positivity rate at 2.1%.

Another two people have died after contracting COVID-19, bringing the death toll to 2,642.

Hospitalizations declined to 136, which is down from 158 earlier in the month. Of the current patients, 30 are in the intensive care unit and 28 are on ventilators.

Over the weekend, the state passed 300,000 people fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

According to Wednesday’s data, roughly 314,000 Rhode Islanders are now fully vaccinated, while a total of 441,000 have gotten at least their first shot.

The Health Department and Gov. Dan McKee will hold their weekly COVID-19 briefing at 1 p.m. Thursday. Watch it live on WPRI 12 and right here on WPRI.com.
