Alabama Tops 1,000 COVID-19 Deaths, 45,000 Cases

Alabama added 23 new COVID-19 deaths to its total, placing the death toll from the virus above 1,000.

MONTGOMERY, AL — the death toll from COVID-19 in Alabama has now surpassed 1,000, after the Alabama Department of Public Health added 23 more fatalities from the virus to its total Tuesday morning. The total number of COVID-19 deaths in Alabama now stands at 1,007.

Alabama also surpassed 45,000 total cases of the virus Tuesday, and has reported 13,511 new cases in the last 14 days. Tuesday's total of 45,263 cases statewide includes 888 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.

Another milestone was reached Tuesday when the ADPH reported more than 1,000 current hospitalizations from COVID-19. The state's total number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients sits at 1,016.

For the first time in several days, Jefferson County did not lead the state in new COVID-19 cases Tuesday. Mobile County emerged as the state's leader Tuesday with 90 new cases. Montgomery and Baldwin counties were second and third, respectively.

The counties with the most new cases reported Tuesday:

  • Mobile County: 90 new cases; 4,219 total
  • Montgomery County: 88 new cases; 4,246 total
  • Baldwin County: 86 new cases; 980 total
  • Jefferson County: 76 new cases; 5,486 total
  • Calhoun County: 65 new cases; 387 total
