Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian recovering from heart surgery

Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian underwent successful heart surgery last week, the result of annual physicals on the staff.

“The Alabama football coaching staff participates in an annual executive physical. During Coach Sarkisian’s physical last week, it was determined that he needed a procedure to correct a congenital cardiovascular anomaly before it became an issue,” the statement from Alabama athletics read. “Coach Sarkisian underwent a successful procedure this past Thursday (July 2) in Birmingham. He is back home in Tuscaloosa and is expected to make a full recovery.”

Sarkisian is set to enter his second year as Alabama’s offensive coordinator. He was a candidate for some head-coaching jobs in the offseason, including Mississippi State and Colorado.

Sarkisian was credited with helping bring five-star quarterback Bryce Young to UA, after the Santa Ana, California, native flipped his commitment from USC to Alabama in October.

Alabama is in the midst of summer workouts while safeguarding against the spread of COVID-19 cases; it has not released the results of its testing. Sarkisian and Alabama are scheduled to face his former school, USC, to open the season on Sept. 5. Sarkisian was fired from USC on Oct. 12, 2015.
