The Florida Department of Health is reporting that 16,826 people have tested positive for the new coronavirus across the state, according to figures released Thursday evening.

There have been 2,298 people hospitalized and 371 deaths, according to the data.

Nearly 157,000 people in Florida have been tested for the virus, with nearly 11% of the tests coming back positive, according to the latest state data.

In South Florida, the percentage of positive tests continues to exceed the statewide average: 18.5% in Miami-Dade County, 11.7% in Broward County, and 18.1% Palm Beach County, the state health department reported Thursday.

With the state’s population of about 22 million people, it means about 1 out of every 140 residents have been swabbed, Gov. Ron DeSantis said.

The case totals are 5,898 in Miami-Dade, 2,480 in Broward and 1,333 in Palm Beach County.

More than 200 have died across South Florida

The latest data also shows that Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties now account for 208 of the state’s 371 deaths from COVID-19, as of Thursday evening. That means those three counties have 56% of all the infected people who have died.

Palm Beach County has had 75 deaths from the coronavirus, more than any other county in Florida. In Broward, 67 people have died and Miami-Dade County has had 66 deaths.

There are now almost 1.6 million cases of the disease worldwide, and 94,850 people have died. In the United States, there are more than 456,000 cases, and the U.S. death toll had reached 16,294 by Thursday evening. New York leads the nation with 7,067 deaths.
