CASS COUNTY, MI – Visitors to the Cass County Fair can get a $50 gift card when they get a coronavirus vaccine.

Anyone 12 and older can walk into the commercial building at the fairgrounds and get the free Pfizer or Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine between Aug. 2 and 7, a news release from the Van Buren Cass District Health Department.

People who are 18 and older can get a $50 Visa gift card while children between 12 and 17 can get a $25 gift card, the release said. There is a limited number of gift cards, so they are first come, first serve.

Vaccines are administered Monday through Thursday between noon and 6 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, they will be administered between noon and 7 p.m.

Between July 18 and 24, Cass County had 28 positive cases of COVID-19 and a 6.6% positivity rate, the health department said. Masks are recommended for vaccinated and unvaccinated people while indoors in public, which follows the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendation, the health department said.

Cass County has administered 31,402 vaccines as of July 27, per the state of Michigan. That means 38% of residents have received at least one dose. Leelanau County has the highest rate of vaccines with 77% of residents with at least one dose.

As the Delta variant spreads, it threatens to slow down progress made in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, the health department said.

“As the prevalence of the Delta Variant continues to rise, it is important for individuals to get vaccinated against COVID-19,” the release said. “You can greatly reduce the risk of a symptomatic COVID-19 infection by receiving any of the available vaccines. You can do your part to protect yourself and the people around you by receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.”
