Vermont has graced the silver screen many times over the years — especially when movies want to capture the state's idyllic scenery. Here are some notables movies filmed in the Green Mountain State, and where to visit their filming locations.

For a more comprehensive list, the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing has compiled a Google Map

"Star Trek" (2009) — Barre

Where do you go in Vermont when you need to film a young Captain James T. Kirk dangling from the precipice of a 600-feet deep cliff? The E.L. Smith Quarry in Barre, of course! This picturesque granite site is the "largest operating deep-hole, dimension granite quarry in the world," according to its owner Rock of Ages. Paramount used the site to film a car chase scene for the 2009 Star Trek film, the Rutland Herald reported.

"I Am Legend" (2007) — Bethel

"Preppers" take note: the best safe place for surviving the apocalypse, according a 2007 Will Smith movie, is Bethel, Vermont. In the movie, the Vermont cold helps prevent the spread of a virus that is destroying humanity, writer Andrew Liptak points out. If only the same could be said for real life pandemics.

"Forrest Gump" (1993) — Reading

For serene shots of foliage and green pastures, the "Forrest Gump" crew filmed at Jenne Farm, "one of the most photographed farms in the world," according to the Milton Independent. The farm, located 15 miles south of Woodstock on Route 106, appears in a scene where Forrest Gump (played by Tom Hanks) is running across America.

"Beetlejuice" (1988) — East Corinth

This freaky Tim Burton-directed classic was partially filmed in the town in East Corinth, the site Chowdaheadz reports. The town's Mason Hall stood in for a schoolhouse in the film, while the main characters' fatal car accident was filmed at the bridge on Chicken Farm Road. Visiting these sites and watching "Beetlejuice" might be the perfect way to get into the Halloween spirit.
