Local churches celebrate homecomings, host revivals

First Calvary Baptist Church, 400 S. Long St., is holding a Community Day from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today.
Activities include a health fair and community resource information tables. Free school supplies, uniforms and books will be given away to children accompanied by a parent or guardian. Lunch will also be served.
Free mammograms, sponsored by the AKA Sorority and Novant Health Breast Center, will be provided on site to pre-registered women only. Call 704-640-0087 for more information or to make an appointment.
Rose of Sharon Holiness Church, 255 Camp Road, will host its annual homecoming service at 11 a.m. today with guest speaker Paschall McNair, pastor of Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
Grace United Methodist Church, 846 Faith Road, will host a Port-a pit barbecue chicken meal from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.
Dine in or take out for $8.50 per plate. All proceeds benefit missions.
Refuge Church of God in Christ will hold a fish fry fundraiser starting at 11 a.m. today at 802 N. Long St.
Grace Deliverance Tabernacle, 1237 Old W. Innes St., will hold a fish fry today from noon to 5 p.m. Proceeds from fish plates, fish sandwiches, and hot dogs go to the building fund.
Fairview Heights Baptist Church’s annual Rainbow Tea fundraiser is at 5 p.m. today at the church, 704 Old Concord Road.
Fairview’s own Evangelist Towanda McNeil will speak. A $5 donation will be accepted.

CHINA GROVE — South China Grove United Methodist Church, 230 Rose Ave., will honor all emergency personnel in the community and county Sunday.
Everyone is invited to attend the 9:30 a.m. service, which will be followed by a free brunch for those in attendance.
STATESVILLE — Back to Church Sunday will be observed at Horizon Church, 316 Signal Hill Drive, at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
Maranatha Bible Church will celebrate its 40th homecoming at 10 a.m. Sunday.
Pastor Peter Newell will preach and special music will be performed by the choir. After the Sunday morning service, there will be dinner on the grounds with food and fellowship.
Homecoming at Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church is at 10:30 a.m. Sunday with a covered dish meal after.
Guest speaker is the Rev. Russell Makant, who served Bethel as a seminary intern in 2002-2003.
Makant is currently serving as the pastor of Mt. Hebron Lutheran Church in Hildebran.
Outreach East Leadership Training and Worship Center, 2218 Statesville Blvd., holds worship services at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, noon and 7:30 p.m. Thursdays and 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
The homecoming service at Grace Lutheran Church, 3020 Grace Church Road, begins at 10:30 a.m. Sunday with the Rev. Gary Weant as guest preacher. A picnic lunch will follow the service.
Weant, a Rowan County native, recently began his 38th year as pastor at Philadelphia Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dallas.
Special music for this service will be by the chancel, children and handbell choirs.
CLEVELAND — Lebanon Lutheran Church, 1200 Thompson Road, will celebrate its 120th homecoming Sunday.
The Rev. Glenn Reichley, former pastor at Lebanon, will speak.
The service begins at 10:30 a.m. A covered dish meal will be served in the fellowship hall afterward.
ROCKWELL — Rockwell United Methodist Church, 430 East Main St., observes homecoming during the 10:30 a.m. service Sunday.
The Rev. Dr. Glenn Jonas is guest speaker.
He is the Howard professor of religion and chair of the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Campbell University in Buies Creek.
A covered dish luncheon and fellowship will follow the morning service.
Christiana Lutheran Church will celebrate its 142nd homecoming Sunday with the Rev. Dr. Gemechis Desta Buba as guest teacher and preacher.
He currently serves as assistant to the bishop for mission for the North American Lutheran Church.
Buba is originally from Ethiopia and now lives in Columbus, Ohio, with his wife and two children.
Worship begins at 10:30 a.m., led by the Rev. Carl Haynes. The chancel choir will sing.
Following worship is a covered dish luncheon. Members are asked to bring food to share. Drinks, paper products and utensils will be supplied.
Christiana is located 5 miles east of Interstate 85 at 6190 U.S. 52 near East Rowan High School.
SPENCER — Calvary Lutheran Church, 303 5th St., celebrates homecoming Sunday.
A covered dish luncheon immediately follows the 10:30 a.m. Holy Communion service.
There will be a Calvary slide show running during lunch.
KANNAPOLIS — Eastwood Baptist Church, 320 Cook St., observes Back to Church Sunday.
This casual dress event held Sunday features special music, followed by fellowship with hamburgers and hotdogs.
CHINA GROVE — Mount Zion United Church of Christ, 1415 S. Main St., celebrates homecoming during the 11 a.m. service Sunday with the Rev. William Campbell as guest preacher.
Campbell served as pastor of Mount Zion UCC from 1989 to 2010.
Following worship all are invited to the new building for a covered-dish dinner.
All youth fellowships will be meeting at 5 p.m. Sunday. The meeting will include a special mission trip to the Main Street Mission in China Grove for the older youth.
Emmanuel Baptist Church, 2300 Bringle Ferry Road, starts revival at 11 a.m. Sunday with guest speaker Steve Chipps, pastor of Hillside Park Baptist Church.
The choir from Hillside Park Baptist Church will be performing special music during the 6 p.m. service Sunday.
CONCORD — St. John’s Lutheran, 100 St. John’s Church Road, will celebrate homecoming Sunday.
Dr. Charles Rhodes will teach the combined adult Sunday School classes at 10 a.m.
St. John’s has been supportive of his medical mission trips to the Dominican Republic.
Worship will begin at 11 a.m. when the Rev. Dr. Brady Faggart Jr. will deliver the homecoming sermon.
Following worship there will be a covered dish meal at the fellowship building near the ball field off of Mt. Olive Road. The Heritage Center will be open from 2 to 4 p.m.
Genesis Baptist Church, 9710 Old Concord-Salisbury Road, will celebrate homecoming Sunday.
During the 11 a.m. service there will be special singing by Total Praise, and a nursery will be provided. A covered dish dinner follows the service.
KANNAPOLIS — Homecoming at St. Enoch Lutheran Church, 701 Campbell Ave., (Enochville), is Sunday with worship at 11 a.m., and a covered dish meal afterward.
The Rev. John Bost, a son of the congregation and pastor of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Livermore, Calif., will be the guest speaker.
There will be fellowship at 9:45 a.m. and worship at 11 a.m. with a covered dish meal following.

STATESVILLE — New Creation Baptist Church’s homecoming is at 3 p.m.. Sunday at the Statesville Civic Center, 300 S. Center St.
The Rev. James Miles from God’s Tabernacle for Believers of Rockwell will be the guest speaker. Dinner will be served at 2 p.m.

EAST SPENCER — Revival at Shady Grove Baptist Church starts at 3 p.m. Sunday with speaker the Rev. Patrick Tate, pastor of Southern City AME Zion Tabernacle.
It will continue at 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday with the Rev. Nilous Avery, pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, as the guest preacher.
Fall Revival at Moore’s Chapel AME Zion Church, 500 Partee St., is Sunday through Wednesday.
Sunday’s service is at 3:30 p.m., with the Rev. Mark Evans, pastor of Jonahville AME Zion Church, Huntersville.

Children’s choirs begin Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, East Ridge Road.
Under the leadership of the Rev. David Hutchins, preschool and children’s choirs will be organized.
Preschool Choir will meet in the old youth room. Children’s choir will meet in the current adult choir room.
Parents may bring their children for this organizational meeting and stay for homemade ice cream after the evening service.
The United Ministerial Alliance will host its joint fellowship service at 7 p.m., Sunday at Solid Rock Church of God, 1004 Locke St.

SPENCER — Spencer Presbyterian Church’s community health ministry offers lunch and a program to address the needs and questions of those caring for aging, ill and disabled loved ones at 12:15 p.m. Monday in the fellowship hall. The public is invited.
The church is located on First Street off Salisbury Avenue.
The Sunday evening service at Calvary Baptist Church will be outside and under the arbor behind the fellowship hall at 6 p.m.
Each year Calvary celebrates the end of summer with homemade ice cream.
Dr. Steve Sells is guest speaker. He grew up in Calvary Baptist Church and currently serves as director of missions for the Randolph Baptist Association in Asheboro.

The One Hundredth General Assembly of Northern, Southern, and Northwestern Dioceses Church of God Founded by Jesus Christ, Inc. will convene at Lilly’s Chapel Church of God, 618 W. Thomas St., Wednesday through Sunday.
The One Hundred Year Banquet will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 at Hotel Salisbury & Conference Center, 530 Jake Alexander Blvd.
Special guest speaker will be Pastor Robyn Gool of Victory Christian Center in Charlotte.
Salem Lutheran Church, 5080 Sherrills Ford Road, will begin a Grief Share Care group from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The group will meet for 12 weeks, Each meeting includes a video that features Christian grief-recovery experts and the stories of people who found healing.
There is no cost but each person or couple is encouraged to purchase the $15 workbook that guides participants through grief exercises.
Word of Life Family Worship Center, 726 E. Liberty St., will have its annual fall revival at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday .
Bishop Harvey Rice, pastor of Mt. Calvary Holy Church, will speak each night.
There will be special music and the dance ministries will also minister.
The countdown to national collection week community events for Iredell, Rowan and Cabarrus counties begins at 7 p.m. Thursday at High Rock Church West Campus, 710 Jake Alexander Blvd. W.
Special guest is Izabella McMillon, who grew up during the communist regime in Romania.
The South Piedmont Volunteer Team for Operation Christmas Child will host a time of celebration, inspiration, worship and fellowship in preparation for National Collection Week, which takes place Nov. 18-25, and prepare to share the love and hope of God with millions of hurting children all around the world through simple gift-filled shoeboxes.
Light snacks will be provided, along with the opportunity to pick-up materials and meet with Izabella and area team members.
This free event is open to anyone interested in learning more about Operation Christmas Child. .
