Construction is in full swing at the Anson Volunteer Fire Department since they are making improvements to their headquarters.

Anson Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Perry Thomson said that his department received a fire truck from the Texas A&M Forest Service in 2018, which led them having to find a new bay to house the truck.

"We've always wanted to have a new station for years," said Thomson.

The Anson Volunteer Fire Department is transforming their old meeting room into a bay for the new fire truck, which has allowed their firefighters to build a new housing quarters building right across the street.

“The front room will be our training and meeting room and then the back part will be an exercise room," Thomson said.

The housing quarters building will also have bathrooms with showers, a kitchen and storage.

Another benefit of the new housing quarters building will be that it will have both air conditioning and heating.

“Here, hopefully we will have a cool place for the summer and [a] warmer place for the winter,” said Thomson.

The City of Anson gave the Anson Volunteer Fire Department more than $87,000 for building materials, leaving it up to their firefighters to build their new facilities themselves.

“We appreciate the citizens who have donated and those who do donate," Thomson said. "The city really stands behind us and the townspeople do too.”

The Anson Volunteer Fire Department hopes that these improvements will help retain and attract future volunteer firefighters.

Thomson added that he hopes that the construction projects will be done by the beginning of next year.
