MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A man has died after being shot “multiple times” in Berkeley County, W.Va., early Friday.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Thomas Dove Jr., 40.

“We’re not exactly sure where he was staying. ... We’re not sure what his permanent address was,” said Sheriff Curtis Keller.

Law enforcement was called at 12:49 a.m. to check on the welfare of a man in the 2300 block of Paynes Ford Road, the sheriff said. The location is about three-quarters of a mile from the Eastern West Virginia Regional Airport.

“They determined the male had been shot multiple times,” Keller said.

Dove was taken by ambulance to Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg, where he was pronounced dead. His body has been taken to medical examiners in Charleston, W.Va, for an autopsy.

Keller said police were continuing to investigate the shooting at midday Friday.

He asked Paynes Ford Road property owners who have security cameras to contact police.

Anyone with information about the incident also is asked to call the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office at 304-267-7000 or Crime Solvers at 304-267-4999.
