Director

Dr. Khaled Galal

Dr. Khaled Galal has a track record and reputation in experimental and analytical research in the area of upgrading the performance of reinforced concrete, steel and masonry structures subjected to extreme loading events such as severe earthquakes, high wind forces, blast loads and progressive collapse. To enhance the performance of existing structures, he focuses on the applications of innovative materials and systems, such as fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. Dr. Galal’s research expertise spans a wide spectrum of “Sustainable Buildings and Infrastructure” covering: Structural engineering, Reinforced concrete and masonry structures, Highway and railway bridge Infrastructure, Earthquake engineering, Rehabilitation of structures, Mitigation of progressive collapse of structures, and Applications of new FRP composite materials.

Associate Director

Dr. Ashutosh Bagchi

Dr. Ashutosh Bagchi research interest includes structural health monitoring (SHM), infrastructure rehabilitation, and earthquake engineering. He has conducted analytical and field-based collaborative research projects on SHM on a number of bridges across Canada. He has industrial experience in both structural engineering and information technology, and developed unique interdisciplinary skills to bridge these areas. In the past, Dr. Bagchi worked closely with the ISIS Canada Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE) on a number of SHM projects and is currently associated with a new NCE on collaborative research between Indian and Canadian researchers (IC-IMPACTS). He is an affiliated to the International Society for SHM of Intelligent Infrastructure (ISHMII) and many other professional societies related to Sustainable Infrastructure.

Dr. Lucia Tirca

Dr. Lucia Tirca has an extensive industrial and research experience in Quebec and Canada in the area of steel structures. Her research interests include the development of a framework for multi-hazard performance-based design addressing wind and earthquake hazard, with insights in building resilience and mitigation of economic losses. Dr. Tirca has developed innovative earthquake resistant steel frame systems equipped with ductile fusses, passive energy dissipation devices and segmental trussed-spines for multi-storey buildings. She has also worked on seismic assessment and retrofit of existing steel structures, design of connections, and development of low-cycle fatigue models. Dr. Tirca has authored/ co-authored several articles in peer reviewed journal and conferences. She is a member of the ASCE Technical Council on Life-cycle performance, safety, reliability, and risk of structural systems, member of ASCE Committee on Disaster resilience of structures, infrastructures and communities and member of CEISCE strategic cluster funded by the FRQNT.

Dr. Lan Lin

Dr. Lan Lin has extensive research expertise in the fields of structural and earthquake engineering, focusing on the improvement of the design and performance of buildings, bridges and infrastructure systems subjected to seismic loads and blast loads. In addition to her research expertise, she has extensive practical experience in the design of buildings and bridges. Dr. Lin’s research interests are focused on the investigation of the seismic performance and risk assessment of infrastructure such as dams, power plants, transmission towers, and pipelines as well as highway bridges and buildings.

Dr. Anjan K. Bhowmick

Dr. Anjan K. Bhowmick has been actively involved in research in the area of structural and earthquake engineering. His research interests include seismic design and analysis of steel and composite structures, seismic retrofit and rehabilitation of existing structures, and bridge engineering. He has also worked on fatigue of steel structures and connections of steel structures. Dr. Bhowmick has authored/coauthored several articles in peer reviewed journals and conferences. In addition to his research expertise, Dr. Bhowmick has extensive valuable industry experience as a structural/bridge design engineer in Canada.

Dr. Emre Erkmen

Dr. Emre Erkmen has received his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering in 1999 and M.A.Sc degree in Structural Engineering in 2001 both from Istanbul Technical University. He has received his Ph.D. degree in Structural Engineering in 2006 from University of Ottawa. He has worked as a Research Associate from 2007 until 2010 at University of New South Wales. From 2010 to 2018, he has worked at University of Technology Sydney as a Lecturer and later as a Senior Lecturer. He has joined the Department of Building Civil and Environmental Engineering at Concordia University as an Assistant Professor in 2019.

Dr. Farah Hafeez

Dr. Farah Hafeez joined Concordia University in 2020 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering. She received her PhD specializing in timber structures from the University of Ottawa. Before joining the BCEE department, she worked as a structural engineer and designed wood-based commercial and residential buildings. She pursued her MASC from Western University, focusing on the effect of wind loads on steel structures, while her B-Eng degree was obtained from NED University in Pakistan. After completing her bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, she worked on various infrastructure-related projects, including road and highway rehabilitation, port and harbour development, and buildings. Currently, her research focuses on Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of wood buildings and bridges, sustainable design and composite systems, wood-soil interaction, retrofitting techniques for timber heritage buildings, and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) based optimization algorithms in wood structures and materials.
