Best croissant in Sacramento? Here’s what readers told The Bee after hot online debate

Croissants are having a moment in Sacramento, and one bakery in town, according to Bee readers, stands out for selling some of the best.

A croissant craze recently took over the Sacramento Reddit page, and dozens of users have been sharing their favorite places to buy the flaky pastry ever since.

The trend ensued when one Reddit user crowdsourced the page for cheaper or better alternatives to his usual pastry order at La Bou and provided an in-depth explanation for the preferred croissant criteria.

Last week the Bee asked readers to help settle the croissant debate — where are the best ones in town? Exactly 65 Bee readers responded to the survey with their suggestions for the best croissant in town.

Here’s where Bee readers said their favorite croissant is in town:

Ettore’s

2376 Fair Oaks Blvd.

And according to more than 40 respondents, Ettore’s Dessert and Cafe sells some of the best croissants in Sacramento.

Ettore’s is a European bakery known for its pastries that come in a variety of flavors. Several readers recommend its turkey and cheese, spinach and feta and “Vienna” croissant, which contains chocolate and almonds.

Bee reader, Nicholas Flower, said about the turkey and cheese: “I think this is a unique combo of ingredients, and it’s just so... good!”

A handful of readers also recommend the traditional butter croissant from Ettore’s.

Ginger Elizabeth

1801 L St. #60

Six respondents from the survey thought Ginger Elizabeth Chocolates has the best butter croissants. The patisserie also sells macarons, cookies and ice cream.

One reader recommended the hazelnut flavor, which is available only on weekends.

Reader Beka Clement recommends the “pain au chocolat” from Ginger Elizabeth.

“Its crispy flakes on the outside and perfectly paired with the rich and decadent chocolate inside!” Clement wrote.

La Bou

Multiple locations: South Land Park, Carmichael, Rocklin, Roseville

Six respondents voted for the croissants at La Bou Bakery & Cafe — which was the source of the croissant mania.

“La Bou is still the hallmark for croissants, flaky, never over baked, excellent fillings,” one reader wrote, recommending any of the fruit-filled or chocolate flavors.

Another reader recommended the whole wheat croissant, which they claim is the only one in town.

“It’s the only place that has this type (of) croissant that I know of and it’s delicious and healthier than a traditional croissant,” the survey respondent wrote.

What’s the verdict on best croissant?

A few days ago, the initial Reddit user that sparked the craze tried out Costco’s croissants after many users recommended them.

The verdict? “Absolutely delicious,” the user wrote, comparing them to Starbucks’ croissants, “but on steroids.”

“I’m completely sold on the Costco croissant experience. It’s amazing to me, that I can pull a croissant out of my freezer, thaw it out a little bit, heat it up, and then instantly get transported to breakfast heaven!”
