COVID-19 in Florida: 1,707 new cases and 54 more deaths

Florida reported 1,707 new cases of COVID-19 Monday and 54 resident deaths — a slight drop from Sunday’s tally of 2,539 new cases.

Since the pandemic began, the state Department of Health has reported 756,727 cases of the highly contagious coronavirus. As of Monday, 16,021 residents and 201 non-residents have died from the disease.

Most of the deaths happened in recent weeks but were confirmed just in the past day.

Close to 5.75 million people in Florida have been swabbed for the virus since March and 4.98 million have tested negative, state officials say. On Monday, the state reported test results for 36,540 people for a positivity rate of 4.83%, slightly higher than Sunday’s rate of 4.66%.

The overall positivity rate since the start of the pandemic, according to state data: 13.17%.

As Florida and other states begin screening residents with rapid tests, health officials nationwide are showing concern that many results of those tests are going unreported. In Florida, the rapid tests are being shipped to nursing homes, senior communities and public schools. DeSantis said Florida will receive 6.4 million of the rapid antigen tests.

Health experts are concerned about a fall surge in new cases after 10 states reported their highest single-day tallies of new COVID-19 Friday and the country reported its highest one-day total since July. With coronavirus cases soaring in some regions of the country, Dr. Anthony Fauci warned Americans to reconsider traveling to see out-of-town relatives for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The United States has more than 8.1 million cases of COVID-19 and nearly 220,000 deaths.

Testing and positivity rates

The state reported a daily positivity rate of 4.83% on Monday, up from 4.68% on Sunday based on Florida’s method of calculating positivity that counts new infections only, but also counts repeat negative tests.

Johns Hopkins reported Florida’s positivity rate at 13.19% on Monday. That’s a slight drop from 13.3% reported the day before. Unlike state data, Johns Hopkins University counts only first-time test takers in its positivity rate.

In South Florida, the cumulative positivity rates are 18.03% for Miami-Dade County, 13.2% for Broward County and 12.35% for Palm Beach County, state data shows.

As of Monday, 991,364 people have been swabbed in Miami-Dade, 616,269 people have been tested in Broward, and 397,220 people have been tested for COVID-19 in Palm Beach County.

Monday’s report from the state shows test results for 36,549 Florida residents received from labs in the past day. That’s down from 57,765 results on Sunday and 83,567 results on Saturday. and 84,496 results on Friday.

South Florida

Broward County: 191 additional confirmed coronavirus cases and five more deaths. The county has a known total of 81,277 cases and 1,515 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. In total, 5,078 county residents were tested on Sunday, leading to a daily positivity rate of 3.76%. That’s down from 4.83% the previous day.

Palm Beach County: 66 additional cases of COVID-19 and seven more deaths. The county now has 49,068 confirmed cases and 1,497 deaths. In total, 2,409 county residents were tested on Sunday, leading to a daily positivity rate of 2.74%, down from 4% the previous day.

Miami-Dade County: 397 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 and seven more deaths. The county now has 178,726 confirmed cases and 3,547 deaths. In total, 9,560 county residents were tested on Sunday, leading to a daily positivity rate of 4.15% for people with new infections only. That’s down from 4.76% the previous day.

Hospitalizations

At least 47,125 residents have been hospitalized for the disease since the start of the outbreak, state health officials say. That’s 72 more people who’ve checked into the hospital in the past day.

As of 1:15 p.m. Monday, 2,058 people across the state were hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19. That’s 54 more than the 2,004 hospitalized at noon on Sunday.

In total, 552 people in South Florida are hospitalized from the virus. Broward County reported 188 patients are hospitalized, 12 more than the day before; Palm Beach County had 99, two more than the day before and Miami-Dade had the most in the state, with 265 people hospitalized. That’s nine more than on Sunday.

The online report from the state Agency for Health Care Administration updates several times throughout the day. Hospitalizations hit a peak in late July of about 9,500 patients.

Deaths

Statewide: Monday’s report shows a total of 16,021 Florida resident deaths. In addition, 201 non-resident deaths have been attributed to the virus.

Long-term care facilities: At least 6,475 deaths have occurred among residents and staff at nursing homes and assisted-living centers throughout Florida. That’s 21 additional deaths in the past day.

Miami-Dade County has reported the highest number of deaths at long-term care facilities, with 835, one more since Sunday. Palm Beach County is second with 674, or two more deaths in the past day. Broward has reported 440 deaths, three more since Sunday. Hialeah Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Miami Dade has experienced the highest number of deaths — 66. Fair Havens Center in Miami Dade has had the next higher number of deaths — 52.

National and global view

U.S.: America has more COVID-19 deaths than any other country. More than 8.16 million people in the country have been infected with the novel coronavirus and 219,765 have died as of 12:30 p.m. Monday, according to Johns Hopkins University’s Coronavirus Resource Center.

World: At least 40.2 million people have tested positive for COVID-19 and 1,115,079 people have died from the disease, according to Johns Hopkins. The U.S. has had the most COVID-19 cases and deaths of any country. The U.S. has 4.3% of the world’s population, but 20.41% of the world’s cases and 19.73% of the world’s deaths.

Other countries with high COVID-19 case numbers include Brazil with 5.2 million, India with 7.5 million and Russia with 1.4 million.
