A man who was shot inside a courtroom in Person County, N.C., earlier this week has died, officials said.

Christopher Thomas Vaughan was on trial for false imprisonment after being accused of trying to coerce a woman from a Walmart, according to The News & Observer.

After hearing a guilty verdict, the 35-year-old defendant became enraged, threw a chair and ran for the judge’s bench, when a Person County sheriff’s deputy and a Roxboro police officer subdued the man.

At one point Vaughan allegedly tried to grab a deputy’s gun and was shot in the head. He was taken to Duke University Hospital, where he later died, according to the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation.

According to the SBI, which is looking into the incident, the Roxboro officer suffered a head gash, while the sheriff’s deputy suffered a broken hand.

Investigators say that the Roxboro police officer, whose name hasn’t been released, was the one who fired the shot that hit Vaughan.

The shooting happened just before noon on Wednesday at the courthouse in Roxboro, Person County Sheriff Dewey Jones said.
