New COVID-19 cases plummet in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania reported far fewer coronavirus cases in the week ending Sunday, adding 1,896 new cases. That's down 31.7% from the previous week's tally of 2,775 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Pennsylvania ranked 35th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 19.6% from the week before, with 79,884 cases reported. With 3.85% of the country's population, Pennsylvania had 2.37% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, eight states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Across Pennsylvania, cases fell in 50 counties, with the best declines in York, Delaware and Philadelphia counties.

Beaver County reported 26 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 29 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 15,530 cases and 387 deaths.

Allegheny County reported 130 cases and nine deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 154 cases and nine deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 101,776 cases and 2,008 deaths.

Pennsylvania ranked 8th among states in share of people receiving at least one shot, with 61.8% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 53.3%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most used in the United States, require two doses administered a few weeks apart.

In the week ending Sunday, Pennsylvania reported administering another 341,763 vaccine doses, including 138,738 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 392,907 vaccine doses, including 173,857 first doses. In all, Pennsylvania reported it has administered 13,609,746 total doses.

Within Pennsylvania, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Tioga, Potter and Cambria counties. Adding the most new cases overall were Philadelphia County, with 297 cases; Allegheny County, with 130 cases; and Berks County, with 101. Weekly case counts rose in 15 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Chester, Westmoreland and Somerset counties.

In Pennsylvania, 87 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 131 people were were reported dead.

A total of 1,214,895 people in Pennsylvania have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 27,566 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 33,541,887 people have tested positive and 601,824 people have died.
