Work beings Thursday on the municipal parking garage on East Chicago Avenue in downtown Naperville and is expected to last the next five months.

An overhaul of the Central Parking Facility is scheduled in seven phases to allow a portion of the three-level garage to remain open at all times. The work is projected to be completed Sept. 3.

The city hired J. Gill and Co. to repair the concrete, replace the sealant and repaint the garage in addition to recoating the roof level.

The maintenance work will prevent water from leaking through to the lower decks, which contributes to deterioration of the structure, according to the city.

Naperville established its Downtown Parking Deck Maintenance Program in 2016 as a multiyear capital project to ensure the Central Business District parking decks are maintained.

Work will start with repairing concrete and replacing sealant on the west section of the garage and is expected to take until the end of April to complete.

Concrete and sealant repairs in the second phase will take place on the middle section of the facility throughout May.

Similar work will take place in June on the east section.

Two weeks — from June 29 to July 10 — are set aside to recoat the top level of the parking garage to prevent water from leaking through to the lower decks. No vehicles will be allowed on the top level during that time.

In the fifth phase from July 12-21, crews will work on second-level traffic recoating of joints, and it will take another two weeks — July 22 to Aug. 6 — to repaint the ceiling, walls and columns on the second level in phase six.

In the final phase from Aug. 9 to Sept. 3, crews will work on repainting the first level’s ceilings, walls and columns.

Visitors are encouraged to follow all posted detour and closure signs and to use caution while accessing the parking deck.

Overnight parking is prohibited in the Central Parking Facility on Sunday nights.
