Carter Anderson's farewell Section 4 performance lived up to what has been a sterling career for the Ithaca High senior.

Anderson won two individual events and helped two relays to victories, earning Most Outstanding Performer honors in Class A and leading the Little Red to a fourth consecutive Section 4 Class A boys swimming and diving title Saturday at Watkins Glen High School.

That meet was sandwiched between the Class C and Class B finals at the pool. Windsor earned the Class C team title and Maine-Endwell was the champ in Class B for the ninth year in a row. Chenango Valley finished second behind M-E but had an impressive sweep Saturday, winning all 11 finals and setting two pool records.

Chenango Valley's Eli Lanfear was voted Most Outstanding Performer in Class B, with Southern Cayuga's Joseph Angotti receiving that award in Class C.

Saturday's meets were largely about two things: sectional championships and trying to advance to the New York state championship meet for those who had not previously met the state standard. Others could also qualify for states as the overall top swimmer in their event among the three meets.

The state meet will be held March 6 and 7 at the Nassau County Aquatic Center on Long Island.

Carter Anderson of Ithaca swims to a win in the 500-yard freestyle at the Section 4 Class A championship meet Feb. 22, 2020 at Watkins Glen High School.

Great day, Mr. Anderson

Anderson and Lanfear are perhaps the top Section 4 hopefuls at states. Last year Anderson finished fifth overall in the 500 and 16th in the 200 at the state meet. He was on top of his game Saturday. Anderson won the 200 in a pool-record 1:45.68 and took first in the 500 by 15 seconds, posting a time of 4:47.24.

He joined Zachary Foley, Duncan Russell-Anelli and Nate Adams in winning the 200 freestyle relay in 1:30. Anderson finished off a come-from-behind win by the Little Red in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:16.67. Foley, Sam Glaubitz and Wil Dewey swam the first three legs.

All four times for Anderson on Saturday were under the state standard.

Ithaca's other wins came from Dewey in the 200 individual medley (2:03.02), Victor Teng in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.22) and Glaubitz in the 100 butterfly (54.05). Teng overtook Corning's Cal Bartone over the last 50 yards, posting a time of 1:00.22. Bartone was second in 1:00.26. Both were under the state standard.

Ryan McNutt gave Corning a win in the 100 freestyle (48.45) after giving Anderson a run for his money in the 200, finishing second in 1:46.01. Corning's team of Domenic Palumbo, Robin Liu, Yushi Portwood and Bartone won the 200 medley relay (1:39.32) and Hawks diver Nick Jubilee finished first on the 1-meter board Thursday at Maine-Endwell with a score of 530.20, 80 points above the state standard.

Saturday's other Class A winners were Vestal's Conlon Crowley in the 50 freestyle (22.31) and Binghamton's Aiden Howard in the 100 backstroke (55.48).

Joseph Angotti of Southern Cayuga swims to first place in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Section 4 Class C championship meet Feb. 22, 2020 at Watkins Glen High School.

Angotti brothers shine in Class C

Southern Cayuga brothers Joseph and Peter Angotti combined to participate in six victories in the Class C meet.

Joseph Angotti, a senior, was selected Most Outstanding Performer in Class C. He won the 100 butterfly in 53.61 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.7. He joined Peter Angotti, Aidan Brown, JD Rejman in winning the 200 freestyle relay (1:33.55). Southern Cayuga also won the 400 freestyle, with the Angotti brothers joined by Rejman and Owen Overhiser for a winning time of 3:32.57.

Peter Angotti, a freshman, took first in the 200 individual medley (2:16.58) and 100 backstroke (58.76).

The other Class C champions were Susquehanna Valley's Peter Argetsinger in the 200 freestyle (1:56.08), Lansing's Alex Beimel in the 50 freestyle (23.49), Greene's Trent DeHaan in the 100 freestyle (52.68), Lansing's Xander Tavares in the 500 freestyle (5:26.09) and Windsor diver Riley Salt (358.80).

Odessa-Montour's team of Brett Walters, Caleb Thomas, Jacob Mayette and Micah Brewster won the 200 medley relay in 1:49.01, a drop of 15 seconds from their fifth-place prelim time.

Peyton Broderick of Chenango Valley swims to a win in the 200-yard freestyle at the Section 4 Class B championship meet Feb. 22, 2020 at Watkins Glen High School.

M-E, CV share Class B spotlight

Maine-Endwell finished with 518 points thanks largely to consistency up and down the lineup, highlighted by top-three finishes in all but one swimming final. The Spartans received some additional team points Thursday when Gavin Fanning won the diving competition with a state-qualifying score of 505.25.

Chenango Valley's day included six winning times that were under the state standard out of 11 victories.

While he was already set to compete at states, CV's Lanfear was under the standard in all four of his wins. He took the 50 freestyle in 21.81 and the 100 freestyle in a pool-record 46.79. Lanfear teamed with Michael Schultz, Luke Hoyt and Dawson Palmer to win the 200 medley relay in 1:39.69; and he joined Hoyt, Alex Hilldale and Peyton Broderick in taking the 200 freestyle relay in a pool-record 1:29.37.

Broderick was another quadruple winner. He claimed the 200 freestyle in a state-qualifying 1:47.18 and the 500 freestyle in 5:03.82. Along with his win in the 200 freestyle relay, Broderick was part of the winning 400 relay along with Hilldale, Palmer and Schultz (3:20.05).

Schultz and Hoyt also had two individual wins to go with their relay victories.

Schultz won the 100 butterfly (53.32) and 100 backstroke (54.92). His butterfly time was under the state standard and his backstroke time qualified for states as the top time of the day in that event.

Hoyt led the Class B field in the 200 IM (2:04.71) and 100 breaststroke (1:03.49).

Aiden Howard of Binghamton reacts after winning the 100-yard backstroke at the Section 4 Class A championship meet Feb. 22, 2020 at Watkins Glen High School.
