The Monroe County Sheriff's Department says at 6:57 pm on Monday, Dec. 31, a 911 call was received saying the car of Leah Carter, 20, of Gamaliel had left the road and was swept into East Fork Creek.

An extensive search effort began with multiple law enforcement agencies and emergency personnel, including helicopters. The search continued through the night.

The creek level decreased by over 10 feet allowing personnel to have more visibility in the area.

At 5:30 am on Tuesday, January 1, a car was found 500 yards from the Lyons Bridge, where Leah had reported she left the roadway. At this time, Leah has not been found.

Volunteers are asked to sign in and out at the Gamaliel Fire Department to receive assignments and be put into groups. The sheriff's department says this is a dangerous situation and if you decide to volunteer you will need a life jacket.
