Once the amount of obligation is determined, each parent’s percentage share of the basic child support obligation can then be calculated.
Attorney Russell Knight mentions in the article that after the child support obligation multiplied by 1.5 is determined, that number is to be divided by the percentage of time the obligor parent has with the child. These two respective amounts of support are then offset by each other. The smaller child support amount is then subtracted from the larger child support amount.
In the article, the divorce lawyer explains that many parents engage in custody or parenting time that provides for a 50/50 split of the children’s time. An equal amount of parenting time, however, does not mean that one parent does not owe the other child support.
