Three At-Home Beauty Devices For Your Skin And Hair

Following
This article is more than 3 years old.

Looking your best isn’t always easy—especially if you aren’t able to indulge in small self-care rituals like getting your hair done or getting a facial because of the current lockdown measures.

With self-care top of mind for many, I rounded up some of the best at-home beauty devices for the skin and hair that will make you feel and look your best.

BeautyBio’s Cryo Dual Roller

I couldn’t think of any more refreshing tool to use in the summer months than the BeautyBio Cryo Dual Roller that can be used on your face and on your body. The roller launched mid June and shortly after becoming available completely sold out—but don’t worry, it’s back in stock now.

“Our Cryo roller was launched to empower our community with access to clinical-grade technology from the comfort of home,” explains CEO Jamie O’Banion. “Instead of paying for an in-office cryo skin icing session, anyone can easily glide our roller over their skin and achieve the pore-tightening, skin-firming benefits of a 45-degree cryo chill without ever having to move from the sofa. ‘Netflix and Chill’ has taken on an entirely new meaning now!”

The Cryo Dual Roller is made from professional-grade stainless steel with two roller heads—one for the face and body and the smaller side for more delicate areas like around the eyes. When it comes to the beauty benefits one can expect from using the Cryo Roller O’Banion tells me, “At 45 degrees cellular functionality heightens: skincare absorbs more effectively, collagen engines go into overdrive producing more collagen, pores tighten, the chill helps pull toxins and oils from skin’s surface, immediately decreasing skin’s propensity for breakouts, and it helps makeup stay in place longer when applied after use.”

Unlike a frozen quartz or jade roller, the Cryo Dual Roller holds its intense chill for an impressive amount of time. It comes down to the device’s design. “The roller heads are constructed of solid stainless steel that has been precision-cored to provide the optimal weight and pressure needed for maximum skin benefits,” O’Banion tells me. “Many skin icing tools are constructed of plastic wrapped in a thin metal sheet or comprised of frozen gel beads, which will not achieve or sustain maximum cold temps the same way that pure stainless steel will.”

The Cryo tool comes in two options. If you already have GloPRO base you can purchase the Cryo attachments. If you don’t have GloPRO you can buy the Cryo Dual Roller. This little tool has become one of my new favorites. It is ergonomically designed, retains its cold temperatures for an incredible amount of time, and it tightens my skin and cools me off instantly.

On how O’Banion likes to incorporate her device into her self-care routine she tells me, “I love to GloPRO at night, apply my topicals for max absorption while microchannels are open then seal in the benefits with Cryo (just like when a hair colorist will first rinse with cold water to seal hair cuticles and fresh color—same concept for skin—instant tightening and sealing-in of benefits). So happy that everyone is loving it!”

MODA ONE by Tineco

Launched at the beginning of July, Tineco, a leading innovator in smart technology for home care appliances launched MODA ONE, a smart hairdryer that marks their first entry into the haircare space.  Tineco stepped into the market in 2019 with their smart cordless stick vacuum with their proprietary patented iLoop™ sensor technology that automatically adjusts the suction based on the amount of dust and dirt on the floor. The company saw an opportunity to take this technology and apply it to the haircare category to create a hair dryer that dries the hair quickly without sacrificing the integrity of the hair or scalp.

“Compared to other products, what makes MODA ONE and our anion technology unique is the timing at which ions are released,” explains Alex Ruan, General Manager of Tineco’s International Business Division. “Ions seal hair cuticles making it shiny and smooth. However, when the hair is too wet, ions cannot effectively seal and protect. When the hair is too dry, no amount of ions can help smooth it out. So the key is to release the ions when the hair is nearly dry, but slightly damp. The moisture sensors in MODA ONE can detect the proper moments to release these ions, thus giving the hair a static-free, frizz-free, and shinier finish.”

The MODA ONE has a tiny yet powerful digital motor that incorporates 13 impeller blades that spin up to 105,000 round revolutions per minute, which is 3 times faster than an average hair dryer. “Our advanced iLoop Smart Sensor Technology measures hair moisture levels over 20 times per second,” continues Ruan. “And, combined with the Airflow Concentration technology, this hair dryer produces a high-velocity stream of controlled air for fast drying and precise styling. These performance elements not only make for more efficient drying, but also one that is significantly better for hair and scalp health.”

On first blush, I thought MODA ONE would operate like the Dyson hair dryer, but that is not the case even though they look similar. The Dyson dryer only detects the temperature of the air coming out of the dryer and unlike the MODA ONE doesn’t detect hair that is already dry.

“Recognizing that each person’s hair is unique, MODA ONE detects real-time moisture and temperature around the hair and scalp to automatically adjusts the air flow and heat from the hair dryer,” explains Ruan. “Increasing airflow and heat when the sensors detect higher moisture speeds drying time, while decreasing airflow and heat when the sensors detect low moisture protects hair from damage and over-drying.  A colored iLoop™ LED light ring on the dryer that provides real-time drying feedback by changing from red to blue to indicate when hair is dry.

I never really thought I could get jazzed about a hair dryer, especially since I am more of a skincare/makup gal. But, I love my MODA ONE. It is quiet. It comes with snap-on magnetic attachments that smooth, diffuse, and offer concentrated styling, and you can even connect with hair dryer via a smartphone for additional settings for kids and pets.

Nuovaluce Anti-Aging Microcurrent + Light Therapy Device

Light therapy and microcurrent technologies aren’t new for the skin. But, the Nuovaluce Anti-Aging Microcurrent + Light Therapy Device is the first device I have seen where the two technologies are combined into one at-home device.

The FDA-cleared device was launched in 2017 and was founded by beauty entrepreneur Angelo De Simone, who was a consultant for one of the world’s first at-home red light therapy device and has worked alongside others to develop FDA-cleared microcurrent and light therapy device for home use.

“The anti-aging market makes up nearly half the beauty market in the United States,” states De Simone. “At $500-$700, a sophisticated anti-aging treatment is an investment. What makes Nuovaluce different is its main price point. At $450, which can be broken up into four payments of $72.96, it’s slightly more affordable and can be purchased in an easier, more practical manner.”

Merging the two technologies took a lot of trial and error. “We found a way to merge two of the hottest anti-aging methods and combine them into a handheld device that utilizes a combination of scientifically proven, FDA Cleared technology,” continues De Simone. “Our microcurrent and light therapy device delivers controlled energy three layers deep into the skin. From there, it reactivates natural collagen production and restores the skin’s natural support in less than 10 minutes. While the microcurrent treatment firms and tones your skin, the red light treatment heals skin tissue and reduces wrinkles.”

One of the unique characteristics of this device is that it doesn’t require the use of conductive gel—something that other microcurrent devices say is required (and typically sell). When I ask why this is De Simone tells me, “In our industry, it has been widely believed that a conductive gel was needed for anti-aging devices that utilized micro-current technology. After years of research, including a research study done in part with Princeton Consumer Research, and creating our own clinically-proven device, we have learned that this gel is not necessary.”

I love that this device incorporates two technologies that I am a huge proponent of and use regularly on their own. Nuovaluce simplifies my beauty routine, it yields visible results quickly, and I don’t need any extra product to use it, which reduces operating costs over the long run—making it a win-win.
