COVID-19 hospitalizations drop in Pa. over weekend

Pennsylvania hospitals were caring for 2,919 COVID-19 patients as of Monday morning, down from 2,946 on Friday.

The number in intensive care, 665, fell by 22 from Friday.

The state on Monday reported 105 new deaths since 12 a.m. on Friday, raising Pennsylvania’s death toll to 30,523.

Pennsylvania reported 11,208 new COVID-19 infections for the period between 12 a.m. Friday and midnight Sunday.

Pennsylvania last week passed the milestone of 70% of adults being fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Pennsylvania’s level of new cases, which began surging in early July, has been mostly flat for nearly a month, but still hasn’t shown a clearcut downward trend.

The state’s seven-day average of new cases stood at 4,438 as of Sunday, according to tracking by Reuters.

As it stands, the latest surge has reached about half the level of Pennsylvania’s worst surge, which took place before vaccine became widely available.

Hospitalizations are roughly half the level of that surge, which peaked in December.

Still, Pennsylvania’s rate for positive COVID-19 tests increased slightly to 9.7% during the week that ended Thursday. That’s nearly twice the level that public health care experts hope for and take as a signal the level of new cases will begin declining rather than rising.
