SAVOY, Mass. (AP) -- A Berkshire County road destroyed when the remnants of Hurricane Irene roared through Massachusetts nearly four years ago is finally getting repaired.
The Berkshire Eagle reports that the town of Savoy is getting about $7 million in state and federal funding to rebuild Black Brook Road. No town money will be used.
The road has been closed since August 2011.
The Board of Selectmen expects to award the project to a bidder this week. Construction should begin this summer.
A study found that the closure added 35 to 40 minutes to commutes.
It was also a public safety issue. The fire department in adjacent Florida has been handling many Savoy calls that Savoy firefighters could not reach easily due to the road closure.
